🎆🇺🇸 Fireworks, Freedom & Freaked-Out Pets 🇺🇸🎆
While we may love the Fourth of July, many of our pets are counting down the hours until it's over.
Every year I hear from pet owners whose dogs, cats, and even horses become anxious, clingy, restless, trembling, pacing, panting, hiding, or desperately trying to escape when the fireworks begin.
A few simple tips can help:
🐾 Keep pets indoors during fireworks
🐾 Close windows, blinds, and curtains
🐾 Turn on calming music, a fan, or the TV to help mask the noise
🐾 Make sure collars, tags, and microchip information are current
🐾 Create a quiet, safe space where your pet can retreat
🐾 Exercise dogs earlier in the day before the festivities begin
As a homeopath, this is also one of the busiest times of year for acute consultations because not all fear looks the same—and neither should the remedy.
Some remedies often considered include:
🌿 **Aconite** – Sudden, intense fear and panic. The pet may appear terrified, restless, frantic, and unable to settle after the fireworks begin.
🌿 **Phosphorus** – Sensitive, affectionate animals that seek comfort and reassurance. They may become clingy and want to be close to their people.
🌿 **Arsenicum album** – Anxious, restless pets that cannot relax, constantly move from place to place, and seem worried or unsettled.
🌿 **Borax** – Particularly useful when animals are startled by sudden noises and may react strongly to sharp sounds or unexpected bangs.
🌿 **Stramonium** – Intense terror with wide eyes, frantic behavior, and a desire to stay close to people for security.
The key is matching the remedy to the individual animal's response rather than simply treating "fear of fireworks."
Remember, what sounds like a celebration to us can sound like a threat to our animals.
