The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group

The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group We began as a husband and wife practice and have worked together for more than 15 years.

We have developed our practice to be as child and family friendly as possible. As the practice has grown we have been fortunate to add an outstanding Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and then an excellent Pediatrician who both share in our love of children and dedication to the high standard of care we have set in our practice. Because we are all parents ourselves we understand the special trust our p

atients place in us. As a small group we offer personalized attention and consistency of care. When your child is ill and needs to be seen they will be seen the same day by someone who knows their history and will provide the best care possible. If there is a complex medical problem we will be personally committed to making sure that everything is done to make the right diagnosis and obtain the best care available. When there are concerns after hours you will be able to speak with one of us directly. Our goal is to provide the most up to date medical care for our patients by working together as a team with parents to help keep our patients both healthy and happy.

Fun lunchtime walk around the office today! Saw a baby armadillo, baby sandhill crane with his parents, and a bird eating a fish. Saw a gator yesterday but it dipped under the water before I could get its picture.

Summer is quickly approaching, the hot weather is here, and a lot of families are having fun in the pool. This is the perfect time to ensure your child stays safe around the water.

Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4, and most of those drownings occur in swimming pools. Always having an assigned water watcher, making sure kids are in proper fitting life vests when around open water, knowing CPR, and doing swim lessons are important ways to reduce risk around the water.

If you have a home pool, a pool fence is a must and a pool alarm can add an extra layer of protection.

We hope you all have a fun AND safe time in the water this summer!

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death in children between ages 1 and 4. The AAP recommends several ways parents can help keep children safe around home swimming pools and hot tubs―all year long―in your own backyard, your neighbor's, or on vacation.

Iron is essential for your infant's growth and development. That is why all infant formulas are fortified with iron, and why it is recommended to supplement exclusively breastfed infants with iron drops starting at 4 months of age. Once your infant is 6 months of age you can start introducing iron-rich foods. This link gives great ideas for baby-friendly iron-rich foods and other foods to pair them with to increase the iron absorption. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron better so combining high iron foods or iron supplements with a vitamin C rich food will help the iron be more effective. Because cow's milk, goat's milk, and soy milk can block iron absorption, it is recommended to wait until after 12 months of age to introduce these drinks. We routinely will evaluate your child's iron level at their 9-month well child check.

Iron is a crucial micronutrient for baby's development. Make sure your baby is getting enough iron by checking out our list of the best high-iron foods for babies and toddlers.

We talk a lot about limiting screen time here, but what’s more important than limiting to a specific time limit is to ensure that screen exposure does not interfere with doing better activities, especially activities that are creative, physical, or social.

Something interesting to consider is that schools that have significantly reduced screens as part of how they educate have generally seen higher academic performance in their students. Many of our patients who have traded screen time for other activities report being happier and sleeping better.
