Rain. Heat. Storms. Power outages.

Michigan likes to throw a little bit of everything at us - one afternoon it's sunny and 85°, and 10 minutes later it's thunderstorms and a power outage warning.

That's why our programs help people build the skills and awareness to stay safe in all kinds of situations - from extreme heat and severe weather to emergency preparedness and power outages.

Because independence isn't just about achieving goals. It's also about knowing what to do when life doesn't go according to plan.

What weather safety tip do you never leave home without?

Our Independent Living Program members spent the weekend enjoying Newsies the Musical at Stagecrafters and showing support for a familiar face on stage - our own Director of Education, Emily!

The reviews are in: great show, great company, and a wonderful day out in the community.

What’s your next step after high school or a transition program?

For many young adults and their families, that question can feel overwhelming. Balancing independence with readiness, support, and long-term stability isn’t easy - and it’s hard to know where to start.

The good news? Independence doesn’t happen all at once. It’s built step by step, with the right guidance and real-world experience.

That’s where Independence College (right here in Troy!) comes in.

This program bridges the gap between learning and living independently - helping participants build daily living, communication, and workplace skills in a supportive, real-world environment.

✨ Real skills.
✨ Real growth.
✨ Real confidence.

Participants aren’t just preparing for the future - they’re actively building it.

If you’re exploring what’s next, Independence College helps turn uncertainty into a clear, supported path forward.

Independence is possible - and it can start here.

What does a more independent future actually look like?

It looks different for everyone.

For OMO members, it might mean a first job, a place of their own, meaningful relationships, greater confidence, or simply having more say in the decisions that shape their lives.

Every day, we're helping people with developmental disabilities take meaningful steps towards those futures.

Because independence isn't measured by a single milestone.

It's built through countless moments, choices, and opportunities along the way.

We’re honored to partner with organizations that share our commitment to creating more inclusive, connected communities, & we’re especially grateful to MSU Federal Credit Union for the role they’ve played in bringing that vision to life.

Through their support, & the leadership of their CU Capable affinity group, they’re championing people with the developmental disabilities & helping make our programs possible: opening doors to independence, building meaningful connections, & creating opportunities for our members to thrive every day.

We’re thankful to be doing this work together.

Take a moment to hear why they chose to support our mission - & the impact it’s making.

Building connection, one day at a time.

We spent a beautiful day at the Stage Nature Center in Troy - walking the trails, enjoying the fresh air, and simply being together.

Trips like this are about more than getting out of the building. They’re a chance to connect, to laugh, to try something new, and to feel part of a community. For many of our members, that’s an important step toward feeling more confident and independent in everyday life.

We’re grateful for days like this—and for the chance to keep creating them.

Enjoy some of the moments we captured.

Now Accepting Applications for Next School Year: Independence Prep

It’s never too early to start planning for what comes next. If your student is preparing for life after the transition program - or ready to get more out of it now - Independence Prep can help you start that plan today.

We are now accepting applications for the upcoming school year, making this the perfect time to coordinate with your student’s school team for a September start.

💡 Think of it like a work-based learning site - plus so much more:

Students participate twice a week outside of school while gaining hands-on experience through:

Community outings
Real-life independent living practice
Interactive, skill-based learning

With access to a full kitchen, apartments, public transportation, and peer mentors, students don’t just learn—they experience what independent living is really like in a supportive environment.

✅ Independence Prep is ideal for students who are:

Approaching graduation from a transition program
Looking to enhance their current program experience
Gradually tapering transition services
Exploring independent living in the future

This program is a powerful stepping stone toward confidence, independence, and the transition to adulthood—and early planning makes all the difference.

Applications are now open for fall!
