Two people can wear the exact same hearing aid make and model, programmed the exact same way, but hear two completely different things. 👂🤯

Here's why:

Every ear canal is shaped differently, so the same setting can sound completely different from one person to the next. Real-ear measurement is how your hearing aids get adjusted for YOUR ears specifically (instead of an average).

This quick and painless test uses a soft, thin tube placed in your ear canal before your hearing aid goes in. You’ll sit in front of a speaker and listen to speech or sound at soft, average, and loud volumes. As you listen, your audiologist measures how your hearing aids respond inside your ear and adjusts the programming at each level to ensure the most accurate, comfortable fit possible.

There is a real science behind getting hearing aids just right, and REMs help us tailor your devices to your hearing loss, your ear shape, and your listening needs. 🎶📈

This is a common first question from new patients. And it might sound like a yes-or-no question, but unfortunately, it’s not!

Whether hearing aids would help depends on what type of hearing loss you have, how much, at which pitches, in which ear, and how well your brain is picking words out of background noise. 🧠

👉 A screening checks whether sound is getting through.
👉 A diagnostic evaluation measures all of the above!

That's why every hearing test at Inman Audiology in Troy is a full diagnostic evaluation with a Doctor of Audiology. You leave with an actual answer, and sometimes that answer isn't hearing aids at all.

What many people don’t realize is that hearing loss is one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline. When the brain isn’t receiving clear sound, the auditory cortex becomes under‑stimulated, and over time, that lack of engagement can affect memory, processing, and cognitive function. 🧩 🧠

Hearing loss affects far more than communication; it can affect your physical safety, too. 👂⚠️

Even a mild hearing loss makes you nearly three times more likely to fall, and for every additional 10 dB of hearing loss, that risk rises another 1.4x.

Researchers think a few things are behind this connection:

• Reduced spatial awareness - Clear sound helps us understand where we are in a space.
• Higher cognitive load - When your brain works harder to decode sound, it has less capacity for balance and coordination.
• Missed warning cues - If you can’t hear someone say “careful,” you may not notice a hazard in time. 🤕

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury in older adults, and hearing is a risk factor most people never think to check.

This time of year tends to bring a shift in routine: more people, more noise, and busier environments!

Recently, a new patient shared that quick stops, like running into a store, had started to feel more stressful than they used to. With background noise and fast-paced questions, it felt overwhelming to keep up. 😓

I think a lot of people can relate to that pressure in those small, everyday moments, especially when everything feels rushed.

So we talked through what those interactions were like, then tested her hearing and reviewed why busy environments make it harder to catch speech clearly, especially when conversations are short and quick.

We focused on helping her feel more confident in those situations so they did not feel so overwhelming.
The win was a big one for her 👉

She could move through those interactions more easily and even have a quick, friendly exchange without second-guessing herself.

She no longer felt that sense of pressure, and that made everyday errands feel simple again. 💓

October is Audiology Awareness Month, so here's what actually happens during a diagnostic hearing evaluation at Inman Audiology in Troy: 👇

Case history – your story, your symptoms, your health
Otoscopy – I look in your ears
Tympanometry – how your eardrum and middle ear are moving
Pure-tone testing – your hearing, pitch by pitch, ear by ear
Speech testing – how many words you can repeat back
Speech-in-noise – the same thing with background noise turned up

Together, these tell us the type, degree, and likely cause of a hearing change, and whether medical treatment should come first. 🙌

One thing patients tell us most often is that they’ve never had testing of speech in background noise. Understanding people in noise is the number 1 complaint of people with hearing loss, so of course we test it!

Hearing is part of whole-body health, and it deserves the same kind of regular attention as your eyes and teeth!
