One thing we love about what we do here at Oh Bee Mine is that there’s ALWAYS something new to learn!

No matter how much you already know about something, there’s always something else out there that’ll surprise you!

Who knew?! BEES HAVE 5 EYES?!

Yep, FIVE!

They have two big compound eyes on the sides of their heads, made up of thousands of tiny lenses!

But here’s the crazy part…

They also have THREE little eyes on top of their heads called ocelli! Those little eyes help them detect light and stay oriented while flying!

And get this!

Male honey bees, called drones, have HUGE compound eyes that actually meet at the top of their heads! Those big eyes help them spot and follow queens during mating flights!

And it’s not just honey bees! Bumblebees have five eyes too!

We took this picture of a bumblebee out at our property in Foley, and the more we look at it, the more little details we notice!

Look at the sunlight shining through those wings! You can see individual hairs and things you’d probably never notice just watching one fly around!

And while honey bees are a big part of what we do, they’re definitely not the only pollinators we care about!

We’re working toward making our property a place where all kinds of pollinators can thrive. Bumblebees, native bees, butterflies, moths, and all the other little creatures doing their part!

But the thing we really love about all this is the learning!

You can spend so much time around something, think you have a pretty good understanding of it, and then discover something that makes you say, “Well, I’ll be damned! I didn’t know that!”

And that’s what makes it fun!

There’s always something new to discover, something to figure out, or something you’ve probably looked at a hundred times but never really noticed!

Five eyes, six legs, four wings, and one incredible little insect!

Pretty damn amazing what you can learn when you stay curious!

The bread stand is stocked for today!

After a little menu shuffle this week, everything came together and we have a really good fall lineup out today.

You’ll find Pumpkin-Shaped Original Sourdough, Apple Crisp Sourdough, Classic Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls, Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls with Coffee Streusel, Honey Butter Focaccia, and Sourdough Chocolate Chip Cookies.

We also have local honey and whipped honey, along with our dip mixes, sourdough starter, dog treats, and other Oh Bee Mine goodies.

A little menu update for tomorrow!

I had to revamp the menu a bit this week after running through a few ingredients faster than expected, so tomorrow’s stand will look a little different than originally planned.

Quantities are limited, so if you see something you want, don’t wait too long.

LOCAL HONEY IS FINALLY HERE!

We have a few updates this week, and this is the big one: our local honey is officially ready for the stand.

🐝 Mike has been working hard with our hives, and we’re excited to finally offer the same local honey that we use in so many of our Oh Bee Mine recipes.

🐝We’re also making a few menu changes based on what you guys asked for during the city-wide garage sale.

Several people asked about our Classic Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls, so they’re back this week. We also had requests for Honey Butter Focaccia, so that’s joining the menu too.

🐝And since October is officially here, our Pumpkin-Shaped Original Sourdough is back. It’s our classic sourdough loaf dressed up for fall and will be available for $14.

Good morning!
We just wanted to say thank you to everybody who took the time to stop by and check us out yesterday, and especially to the people who keep coming back and supporting us.

One of the coolest parts was having people say, “I recognize that emblem from the farmers market,” or “I’ve been seeing this online and now I finally know what it is.”

That might not seem like a huge deal, but it was pretty damn cool to hear. Oh Bee Mine has just been something we’ve slowly built from our bees, our kitchen, and a whole bunch of ideas we decided to try.

So whether you’re a returning customer, bought something for the first time, or just stopped by to see what the heck Oh Bee Mine was, thank you. We really appreciate everybody who takes the time to check us out and support what we’re building.

Well, this one actually hurt a little.

Someone stole one of our Beardkeeper beard balms from the table today.

I had them sitting out because I wanted people to be able to open them, smell them, and see what we made. I trusted people to handle them and put them back.

It’s only a $12 tin. I’ll survive.

But that little tin started as wax from our own beehives. I cleaned and filtered that wax, worked on the recipe, melted and poured it, scented it, filled the tin, labeled it, and put it on that table hoping somebody would like something we made enough to buy it.

Apparently somebody liked it enough to take it—just not enough to pay for it.

That part sucks.

We’re a tiny family business trying to turn bees, hard work, and a bunch of ideas into something real. Please don’t steal from small businesses.

And if you’re the person who took it, I don’t need an explanation. Just bring it back or leave the $12. That’s good enough for me.

Honeybees working goldenrod on our property.

Goldenrod is an important late-season forage plant for honeybees in Missouri, providing both nectar and pollen when many other summer blooms are beginning to disappear. That late-season food helps colonies build and maintain the stores they’ll depend on heading into winter.

Goldenrod also supports a whole community of native insects, including goldenrod soldier beetles, which feed on the flowers and can contribute to pollination.

Some of the soldier beetles pictured were apparently more interested in pollinating each other.

Nature is beautiful. 😂
