A recent New Jersey medical malpractice case is an important reminder that informed consent matters, even for procedures that may feel “routine.”

According to court records, a $5 million settlement was reached after a lawsuit alleged that an infant suffered a partial pe**le amputation during a 2022 circumcision at Hunterdon Medical Center.

The complaint also alleged that the parents were not adequately informed about procedural options, risks, or the different devices and methods that could be used.

Circumcision is an elective procedure, not a medically required part of routine newborn care.

It’s worth remembering that routine newborn circumcision for non-religious reasons is particularly common in the United States compared to many other countries.

Practices and prevalence vary dramatically worldwide based on culture, religion, and societal norms. But routine circumcision for most infants is not common outside the US.

No procedure is completely without risk. Parents deserve information about benefits, risks, alternatives, including doing nothing. Every procedure has risks, elective procedures expose one to risk without clear, absolutely needed benefits.

While severe complications are rare, they do exist, and parents should be aware so they're making informed choices.

UNC Health is implementing a 'Bidshift' program where nurses will have to outbid their coworkers for work. This only leads to a race to the bottom- threatening nurses' livelihoods, mental health, and their ability to safely take care of patients.
All of this is happening while hospital and insurance company executives take home multi-million dollar salaries and bonuses.
UNC Health has put out a memo saying they will not implement the BidShift program as of 8/6/26 due to community outrage.

Measles in Michigan: Washtenaw County outbreak, MMR vaccine gaps and key actions for providers

Public Health Bulletin for Health Care Providers - April 2026

Dear colleagues,

As of Wednesday, April 15, eight confirmed measles cases have been identified in southeast Michigan — seven in Washtenaw County and one in Monroe County — with evidence of possible unlinked community transmission. As this situation continues to develop, impacted jurisdictions and associated guidance may expand as additional cases are identified.

Situational update

On Wednesday, March 11, Michigan’s first measles case of 2026 was confirmed in an unvaccinated Washtenaw County resident with recent travel to a Florida outbreak site. An outbreak (three or more related cases) was declared Thursday, March 12. As of Friday, April 10, seven cases are linked in this outbreak.

On Wednesday, April 1, an eighth case of measles in Michigan was confirmed in Monroe County, in a patient with no international travel history and no definitive epidemiological link to the Washtenaw County outbreak. The geographic proximity and timing of this case raises concerns about unlinked community transmission in southeast Michigan.

As of Thursday, April 2, the U.S. has reported 1,671 measles cases nationally this year alone, with 94% linked to 17 outbreaks, reflecting a substantial increase in outbreak activity from prior years.
