It's National Witch Hazel Day! ✨ Let's celebrate this tried-and-true cosmetic natural cosmetic ingredient with a deep dive into what it is, its effects, and the Lush products that contain witch hazel extract.

Witch hazels are a deciduous shrub or small tree with three species native to Northeastern North America, along with 1 species each native to Japan and China. The most common species used in cosmetics is Hamamelis virginiana. It blooms in the fall and produces a capsule-like fruit which eventually splits to eject the witch hazel seeds up to 30ft. The twigs and leaves are collected in autumn and used to create an extract through distillation.

Witch hazel extract is one of the most widely used cosmetic ingredients. It is gently astringent, known to ease inflammation and soothe sensitive skin. We use it in many of our skin and hair products for these lovely effects!
