Since 1985, Cloud Nine has been offering Tucsonans Sensory Deprivation which is used for mind expansion, physical and athletic recovery, stress and anxiety management, pain reduction, treatment for PTSD and Fibromyalgia, and deeper meditation. We offer float therapy, Sensory Deprivation, Reiki, Top of the Line Electronic Massage Chair Experience, Energy Healing, and Sound Healing. After over 11 years, Cloud Nine Flotation has permanently closed.

But my relationship with floating didn't begin 11 years ago.

It began in 1985.

I was fortunate enough to learn from Glenn and Lee Perry, the people who invented the commercial float tank. A year later, I opened my first Cloud Nine in Tucson.

Not long after that, I became one of four partners who created the Synergy Center. We were doing something pretty unusual for Tucson in the 1980s—flotation, mind gyms, colon hydrotherapy, massage, meditation, yoga and weekend classes, all under one roof.

That chapter ended in 1989.

Nearly 30 years later, I had a vision—quite literally—that I was supposed to open Cloud Nine again.

There was only one problem.

I didn't even know if floating was still a thing.

Turns out, it was.

So Cloud Nine was born again.

For over 11 years, I had the privilege of introducing people to floating and creating a place where they could step away from the noise of the world for a little while.

People came through my doors for all kinds of reasons. Some were curious. Some were stressed or exhausted. Some were hurting. Some simply wanted to know what it felt like to float.

They trusted me with their quiet, their stories and sometimes very tender parts of their lives.

Some became friends.

And somewhere along the way, Cloud Nine became much more than a business. It became a community.

Floating also gave me the extraordinary luxury of floating my way around the world. Thanks to Cloud Nine, I've floated in six different countries and about 30 different states. I've met remarkable people, experienced float centers of every description and gotten to be part of a worldwide community built around something that first captured my imagination more than 40 years ago.

What a ride.

I wish I could tell you that after 40 years of knowing when to surrender and when to keep going, I gracefully recognized that it was time for this chapter to end.

Yeah. No.

Apparently, when I don't listen to a whisper, the universe is perfectly willing to use a metaphysical 2x4.

This last year brought an infestation in my home that lasted seven months. Then I was rear-ended in an accident that affected me far more, physically and emotionally, than I understood at the time.

And then the pipes beneath my home failed.

Not one pipe. All of them.

I discovered that my insurance didn't cover the plumbing replacement. The result was life-changing debt and a financial reality that made continuing Cloud Nine no longer realistic.

That was the 2x4.

It still smarts.

But something else has been happening at the same time.

My life has been changing.

My work has been changing.

Love has changed me.

And after spending so many years creating a place where other people could become quiet enough to hear themselves, I've had to become quiet enough to hear myself.

Closing Cloud Nine breaks my heart. I built it, nurtured it, worried about it, fought for it, laughed in it and loved the people who came through its doors.

To everyone who floated with me, worked with me, referred someone, bought a gift certificate, told somebody about this strange and wonderful thing called floating, helped me keep going through difficult times, or simply believed in what I was creating:

You made Cloud Nine what it was.

I have spent more than 40 years with floating woven through my life. That's an extraordinary thing to be able to say.

And although I'm grieving this ending, I'm also deeply grateful for what was—and genuinely curious about what comes next.

Cloud Nine is closing.

I'm not.
