Here’s something people don’t always realize about people-pleasing:
It can make you really difficult to have a relationship with.

Not because you’re mean.

Because people can’t actually know you.

If you automatically agree…

If you say “whatever you want”…

If you insist “I’m fine”…

If you never tell someone when they’ve hurt you…

If you keep changing your preferences to match theirs…

They aren’t actually in a relationship with you.

They’re in a relationship with the version of you that’s trying very hard not to cause problems.

And eventually?

You may become resentful because nobody seems to consider your needs.

But you never gave them the opportunity to know what those needs were.

That’s why learning to speak up isn’t selfish.

It’s intimacy.

People can’t truly connect with a person they aren’t allowed to know.

One of the things I notice most often in my work:
People can tell me exactly what their partner is doing wrong.

They can give me the timeline.
The examples.
The text messages.
The tone of voice.
The history.

They can explain their partner beautifully.

And then I ask:
“Okay. And what is happening inside of you?”

Silence.

Not because they don’t have feelings.

Because they’ve gotten really good at monitoring the other person.

What are they thinking?
What are they going to do?
Are they angry?
Are they disappointed?
How do I make this better?
What should I say?

And somewhere along the way, their own internal experience became background noise.

That is one of the reasons I keep bringing people back to themselves.

Before we can change a relationship, sometimes we have to find the person who disappeared inside it.

Which one sounds most like you?

1. I know what I want, but I have trouble asking for it.

2. I know what I want, but I feel guilty for wanting it.

3. I genuinely don’t know what I want anymore.

4. I know exactly what I want. I’m just afraid of what will happen if I say it out loud.

5. I know what I want, but everyone else’s needs seem to come first.

6. I have no idea. I’m exhausted and haven’t even gotten that far.

No explanation required.

Just give me your number.

I’m curious what shows up here.

I’m going to say something that may irritate some relationship coaches:
I don’t think every relationship problem is a communication problem.

Sometimes you communicate beautifully.

They understand exactly what you’re saying.

You understand exactly what they’re saying.

And you still don’t agree.

Sometimes the problem isn’t that you haven’t found the right words.

It’s that you’ve discovered something you don’t want to be true.

You want different things.

You have different values.

One person keeps crossing a boundary.

One person keeps expecting the other to carry the emotional load.

The relationship simply doesn’t fit anymore.

And no communication technique can turn incompatibility into compatibility.

Communication matters enormously.

But sometimes the most honest communication is:
“I understand you. And this still doesn’t work for me.”

That can be a much harder truth to face.

Here’s a question that might make you uncomfortable:Are you actually happy in your relationship… or are you just relieve...

Here’s a question that might make you uncomfortable:
Are you actually happy in your relationship… or are you just relieved there isn’t a crisis right now?

Because those are not the same thing.

Sometimes we call a relationship “good” because:
Nobody is yelling.
There hasn’t been a major fight lately.
They aren’t cheating.
The bills are getting paid.
The kids are okay.
You have a history together.

And technically, nothing is terribly wrong.

But when was the last time you thought:
“I genuinely like the life we’re creating together”?

I’m not asking because every relationship should feel exciting all the time.

It shouldn’t.

I’m asking because “nothing is terribly wrong” is a pretty low bar for a life.

So I’m curious:
Which feels more familiar right now?

A. We’re genuinely connected.
B. We’re functioning.
C. We’re surviving.
D. I’m honestly not sure anymore.

You can answer with just a letter.

Imagine being in a relationship where you don't have to choose between:

being loved
and being yourself.

Connection
and honesty.

Peace
and having a voice.

Partnership
and autonomy.

Compassion
and boundaries.

Vulnerability
and self-respect.

You don't have to become smaller to make the relationship work.

You don't have to become harder either.

You get to become more fully yourself.

That's the kind of relationship work I care about.

And sometimes the first relationship that needs attention isn't the one you're having with someone else.

It's the one you're having with **you.**

If you've been thinking lately,

“I don't even recognize myself anymore.”

“I've lost my personality.”

“I don't know what I want.”

“I feel like I've disappeared inside this relationship.”

—you aren't necessarily looking for another relationship tip.

You may be ready to start finding your way back to yourself.

That's where my work begins.

Quick relationship-with-yourself check-in:
When something feels wrong, which question do you ask first?

**A.** “What did I do wrong?”
**B.** “How can I fix this?”
**C.** “How can I make this okay for everyone?”
**D.** “What do I actually need right now?”

No judgment.

A, B, and C are incredibly common.

Especially for people who learned to monitor everyone else's experience before checking in with their own.

But D is where things start to change.

Not because your needs should always come first.

But because **they should at least be included in the conversation.**

So…

What do you need right now?
Not what should you need.
Not what would make someone else happy.

What do **you** need?

I don't believe you need to completely reinvent yourself to have better relationships.

I'm much more interested in the tiny moments.

The moment you notice you're about to say yes when you mean no.

The moment you catch yourself explaining away something that hurt.

The moment you realize you're waiting for permission.

The moment you pause before automatically fixing someone else's problem.

The moment you say what you actually think.

The moment you choose not to abandon yourself.

Those moments can look insignificant.

But they aren't.

Because change usually isn't one enormous breakthrough.

It's a series of small choices that teach you:
I can trust myself here.

And then again.

And again.

And again.

That's the kind of transformation I want my clients to experience.

Not a temporary high.

A different relationship with themselves that starts showing up everywhere else.

You can learn every communication technique.

Read every relationship book.

Study attachment styles.

Learn about boundaries.

Practice conflict resolution.

And still struggle in your relationships if you don't have a solid relationship with yourself.

Because ultimately, you have to know:

What do I feel?

What do I need?

What matters to me?

What am I willing to accept?

What am I not willing to accept?

What do I actually want?

Who am I?

And perhaps the biggest question:
Can I stay connected to myself while I'm connected to someone else?

That's why I believe the relationship with yourself isn't separate from your other relationships.

It is the foundation underneath them.

And when that relationship changes, the way you show up everywhere else can change too.

Relationship math:
“I'll just ignore this tiny thing.”
“I don't want to make it a big deal.”
“It's probably fine.”
“I'll bring it up later.”

*later*

“WHY HAVE I BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS FOR THREE WEEKS?”

😂

Anyone?

The little things matter.

Not because every irritation needs a confrontation.

But because constantly overriding yourself doesn't make the issue disappear.

Sometimes it just makes the eventual conversation much bigger than it needed to be.
