From Dental Assistant to Dental Consultant.

In 2006, I started my dental career as a dental assistant at a clinic serving underserved and underprivileged communities. Within one year, I became the Clinical Lead Assistant, a role I held for three years.

I was then offered an opportunity with our local Health Department, where I worked as a dental assistant while educating children in underserved communities about oral health and the importance of dental care. In 2012, I transitioned from the clinical side of dentistry into the front office—and I made it my mission to learn every side of the business. From insurance coordinator to regional manager for a DSO, I learned what it takes to make a dental practice work from the front desk, behind the scenes, financially, operationally, and most importantly, for the patients. After nearly 20 years in dentistry, I can honestly say that I was once the manager who needed help.

That experience taught me something that has stayed with me: handing your responsibilities over to a third party isn’t always the answer. Sometimes, what a practice really needs is someone who will come alongside the team, identify the problems, build systems, and help the people already in the office succeed.

I had a boss who invested in my growth, and that investment helped shape the professional I am today. That’s why I created Always Providing Dental Consulting. I don’t want to walk into your practice as an outsider and simply tell you what’s wrong. I want to find the problems, help implement solutions, invest in your team, and become part of the process.

Because when your team grows, your systems improve, and your practice runs better—everyone wins. 20 years of experience. One mission: Always Providing better solutions for your dental practice. Always Providing Dental Consulting
Find the problem. Fix the system. Build a stronger practice.

Recently I’ve seen offices ask 1. How often should the office policy book be updated and 2. How important is it to have one.

☝️ An employee handbook is one of the most important tools a business can have. It creates consistency, sets expectations, and helps protect both the employer and employees. Without one, businesses often find themselves making decisions based on emotion instead of policy, which can lead to confusion, frustration, and legal risk.

Here are some of the biggest reasons every business should have an employee handbook—and the risks of not having one:

Why an Employee Handbook Is Important

* Sets clear expectations for attendance, punctuality, dress code, communication, performance, and workplace conduct.
* Creates consistency so every employee is held to the same standards.
* Protects the business by documenting policies and procedures that can support employment decisions.
* Reduces misunderstandings by providing employees with a resource they can refer to instead of relying on verbal instructions.
* Improves onboarding by helping new hires understand the company’s culture, values, and expectations from day one.
* Supports managers by giving them guidelines for handling employee issues fairly and consistently.
* Demonstrates professionalism and shows employees the organization is structured and invested in their success.

The Cons of Not Having an Employee Handbook

* Inconsistent treatment of employees. Different employees may receive different answers or consequences for the same issue, creating resentment and claims of unfair treatment.
* Confusion about policies. Employees may not know expectations for PTO, holidays, call-outs, overtime, or disciplinary procedures.
* Increased legal exposure. Without written policies, it’s more difficult to defend employment decisions if disputes arise.
* Manager discretion becomes the policy. Supervisors may handle situations differently, leading to inconsistency across the organization.
* Difficulty enforcing rules. Employees can legitimately say they were never informed of expectations if nothing was documented.
* Higher employee turnover. A lack of clear expectations often leads to frustration, decreased morale, and avoidable resignations.
* Payroll and attendance issues. Without written guidelines, disputes over timekeeping, breaks, overtime, and leave become more common.
* Poor accountability. Employees are less likely to take ownership when expectations haven’t been clearly communicated.
* Operational inefficiencies. Managers spend unnecessary time answering the same questions repeatedly instead of focusing on productivity.

Bottom Line

An employee handbook isn’t just a document—it’s a roadmap for your workplace. It protects the business, empowers managers, and gives employees confidence in knowing what is expected of them. Businesses that operate without one often experience inconsistent management, increased employee conflict, policy confusion, and greater legal risk. Investing the time to create and maintain an employee handbook is one of the smartest steps an organization can take to build a fair, compliant, and successful workplace.

💙 The Front Office is the Heartbeat of Every Dental Practice 💙

A successful dental office doesn’t happen by chance—it happens because of an incredible team working together every single day.

To the front office team: what you do matters.

Every insurance breakdown you verify accurately. Every benefit you update. Every phone call you answer with professionalism and kindness. Every patient you help feel welcomed from the very first “Hello.” Every appointment you strategically schedule to keep the day productive. Every clean claim you submit. Every copay you confidently collect. Every account you stay on top of before A/R gets out of control.

None of it is “just paperwork.”

You are helping create a smooth-running practice where the doctor can focus on providing excellent dentistry, the clinical team can stay on schedule, and patients receive the care and experience they deserve.

The little things become the big things:
✔️ Accurate insurance verification
✔️ Professional phone etiquette
✔️ Organized scheduling
✔️ Clean claim submission
✔️ Financial conversations with confidence
✔️ Healthy accounts receivable
✔️ Exceptional patient service

When these pieces come together, everyone wins—the doctor, the team, and most importantly, the patients.

Never underestimate the value of a well-trained front office. Your knowledge, organization, and compassion are often the first and last impression a patient has of your practice.

To every front office professional: You are appreciated. You are essential. And you make more of a difference than you may ever realize. ❤️

When a new patient schedules an appointment, the front office plays a crucial role in ensuring a remarkable experience on the day of the visit, while simultaneously reminding the patient of essential steps that must be taken beforehand.
