Can You Spot the Danger?

These two photos of Tulsa look exactly the same—but there’s one important difference you can’t see.

Ozone pollution is invisible. You can’t see, smell or taste it, but high ozone levels can affect your health, especially for children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions.

That’s why checking the daily ozone forecast matters. Before you head outside, know before you go. Check today’s ozone levels and plan outdoor activities accordingly.

Tomorrow, August 21st, is an Ozone Alert day, meaning unhealthy levels of ground-level ozone are forecasted for the Tulsa area.

Ground-level ozone can make it harder to breathe, especially for children, older adults, people with respiratory conditions, and anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Help us reduce ground-level ozone pollution:

✅ Combine errands into one trip
✅ Carpool, bike, walk, or use transit
✅ Avoid unnecessary idling
✅ Wait to mow the lawn

Up in the sky, ozone is a good thing. It helps protect us from the sun.

But down here near the ground, it’s different.

It’s still the same molecule—three oxygen atoms—but it becomes harmful when it forms in the air we breathe. Ground-level ozone isn’t released directly. It forms on hot, sunny days when pollution from cars, trucks, lawn equipment, and other sources mixes in the heat. You can think of it like pollution “cooking” in the sun.

That’s what creates smog. And breathing it in can be hard on your lungs, especially for kids, older adults, and people with asthma.

So while ozone up high helps protect us, ozone nearby (ground-level) can negatively affect our health.

From Riverside trails to Downtown Tulsa, spending time outside is part of everyday life.

But on certain days, air quality can shift, and it’s not always obvious. Ground-level ozone, the kind we breathe, can affect your lungs, while the ozone layer high above us helps protect us.

If you’re regularly outdoors, it’s worth understanding how those changes can impact your health.
