Your child takes short naps that are all over the place as far as timing goes. You really need to get some things done around the house but your little one wakes up shortly after going to sleep. Your child really fights going to sleep for naps and/or bedtime. Your child has to be rocked, bounced, driven around, put in the stroller, nursed or bottle fed, and/or laid with to go to sleep. Your child

has taken over your bed and you are ready to have your bed back! Your child wakes before 6:00 am. Your little one is often fussy and irritable. They lack interest in people or things and just have a hard time having fun. They can be difficult to be around. Your OWN lack of sleep is taking a toll on you and your family, maybe your relationship is even suffering because of your child's lack of sleep. We can fix all of this with a custom sleep plan suited just for your family! Cortisol gets a bad rap… but it’s actually your body’s built-in “get up and go” hormone!

The goal isn’t to eliminate cortisol. It’s to have it working for your child’s sleep, not against it.

Here’s how it plays a role:

In the morning: Cortisol should be HIGH — this helps your child wake up, feel alert, and start their day
At night: Cortisol should be LOW — allowing melatonin to rise so they can fall asleep easily

But when kids become overtired, their bodies release extra cortisol (think: second wind, wired, hyper, fighting sleep)

This is why:
• Bedtime battles happen
• Night wakings increase
• Early morning wake-ups creep in

Sleep doesn’t just depend on being tired. It depends on being the right kind of tired.

If your child seems “wired but exhausted,” cortisol could be playing a big role.

The good news?
With the right schedule, timing, and sleep habits, we can get those hormones back in balance and sleep will become SO much easier.

Also, keep in mind that chronic sleep deprivation keeps cortisol high and is much worse for a child than a few nights of elevated cortisol during sleep training will be!

I get asked a lot why I don’t do formal sleep training in babies under 6 months. Here is one reason…

"Independent sleep initiation method at three months contributed to an increase in night awakenings at 12 months. . . [This] highlights the importance of having parental support in the first three months of life, which is different at six months of life, when infants start to be able to regulate their emotions without external support. This could be an important implication for the timing of behavioral techniques for sleep disorders in infants, meaning that early behavioral intervention before six months could be detrimental to sleep consolidation in infants."
