Happy World Down Syndrome Day from all of us at the Lab!

Most of our participants have Down syndrome. We feel lucky to meet and get to know people with Down Syndrome from all over the country.

Today, in honor of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), we all have on our crazy socks! Did you know that people wear crazy socks on WDSD because socks look like chromosomes? Down syndrome is characterized by a third copy of the 21st chromosome, so is celebrated yearly on 3/21.

We are so thankful for all of the progress that is being made towards inclusion for people with Down syndrome, but know that there remains much progress that needs to occur. But today, we celebrate all of the wonderful people in our lives with Down syndrome and the impacts they make around us.

This weekend, we had a participant travel into town to come participate in the Cognitive Change Study. He made the most of his weekend by attending a baseball and a basketball game! Knowing he was a fan of the SEC, we made sure to get him to these events since he was helping us so much by coming a long way from home to participate in the study. Along with cheering for the Crimson Tide, he also had a blast exploring some nice food spots around Tuscaloosa. He is a true tide guy!!

The Cognitive Change study had a busy start to the new year beginning with having a wonderful participant back to campus for a second round! Then, Kameron and Sara made a trip to Point Clear to meet another family for the study. Although busy testing, they made a little time to explore the area and take in the beautiful scenery the coast had to offer. Shortly after, Kameron and Sara headed back to get ready to meet a friend coming back for their round two session. All smiles and laughs around here!

We are back! The ID lab is happy to share with you our winter 2023 newsletter.

We have had a busy summer and fall working hard on welcoming some new team members and collecting data for our open projects. It’s been so great to get to work with long time registry families along with welcoming some new members. We look forward to sharing what we are up to with you all.

This holiday season we are beyond greatful for your continued support and affiliation with our lab. It brings us so much joy to work with you and your families everyday. We wish you very happy holidays and a merry Christmas! 🎄🎁 🌟

The UAIDPR is looking for research participants for our Reading Comprehension Study. We are looking for children and teens with Down Syndrome or an Intellectual Disability between the ages of 9 -16 years old AND typically developing children between the ages of 5 -11years old.

The UAIDPR is looking for typically developing children between the ages of 5-11 years old and children and teens with an intellectual or developmental disability who are between the ages of 9-16 years old for the Reading Comprehension Study.

Participants will be asked to complete language and reading tasks over one or two sessions. Families will receive a single $40 gift card for participation! Please check out the flyer attached to this post for more information!

Three of our undergraduate research assistants won awards at the Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity Conference for their poster presentations on the Cognitive Changes Study and the Reading Comprehension Study. Both studies currently have many registry families participating in them! Congratulations to our students and thank you to all of our participants!

Hello there! The UAIDPR is looking for anyone with an intellectual disability or Down syndrome between the ages of 15-25 for our Cognitive Change Study.

This study can be done at a location of your choice (University of Alabama or at your home!). Participants will complete cognitive tasks using picture books and iPads over 2-3 sessions. Caregivers will complete an interview and measures using an iPad. Eligible participants will receive a $50 visa gift card at Time 1 of the study, a $100 visa gift card at Time 2, and a $150 visa gift card at Time 3 after the completion of required sessions. If you travel to campus to participate, your mileage, a meal, and hotel accommodations (if needed) will be reimbursed.
