Today for lipedema awareness month, I'm highlighting Stage 1. Why? Because there is a tendency in our community to sort of roll our eyes at those who haven't progressed much. We all say we wish we had known earlier so we could have maybe prevented progression or gotten help sooner, but then we put these women on the spot and question them to death until they often feel like their lipedema experience isn't valid or isn't as important. I can tell you that many of the symptoms aren't stage dependent. Fatigue, pain, inflammation, tenderness, heaviness in the tissues, decreased mobility, lack of circulation, lymph stagnation...these are all issues those at Stage 1 face. Someone with Stage 1 lipedema can have just as much pain as those who look like their tissues are more painful because they have a larger, lumpier body. Don't make assumptions. Let's be supportive of all body shapes and types and stages that this condition presents and be happy that there are people getting what they need before they progress so far! Thanks to the amazing Aimee Buchanan aka The Lippy Nutritionist, who is a Stage 1 girl herself, for this short video. https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1AAAdJpGD9/

It's Lipedema Awareness Month! Today, an intro to some symptoms commonly seen with lipedema. Doctors aren't taught about it so you may be one the 1 in 10 women (some say even more common!) who have this condition and you aren't even aware. Throughout the month of June I'll be posting different things to look for to see if this might be what is affecting you and giving some practical solutions for how you can reduce pain and live your best life if you have Lipedema! Feel free to share.

New on the blog: Healing From the Inside Out — a personal journey through chronic conditions and how Block Therapy brought real, lasting progress when other approaches felt like band‑aids. If you or someone you love is navigating lipedema, lymphedema, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos, migraines, Hashimoto’s, celiac, or chronic pain, this one’s for you. Read more: https://wix.to/q0IfUzq

What does that mean? I've said before that various therapies I've tried for my awesome combo of chronic conditions ended up being a Band-aid instead of true healing. I stand by that. Until I found Block Therapy things would work for awhile and then I'd hit a wall. There would be slight improvement a...

New lipedema research is always exciting! This research shows, after examining 3000 cross sections of tissue, that the nucleus of cells in adipose tissue (what we would call "fat") is atypical in a significant portioni of those with lipedema. This means that at the cellular level there are differences in the cells of lipedema patients vs. those who do not have lipedema. This research did not attempt to draw conclusions from their findings or establish causal relationships, only to discover if atypical structure was present. If you want the nerdy specifics, you can go to the link.

If you have lipedema, you have sluggish lymphatics, whether any professional type person has mentioned it, diagnosed it, thought of it or NOT! You may even have lymphedema, even if your body doesn't match those pictures that are everywhere of a much larger arm or leg on one side of the body but not the other. Lymph problems don't always show up like that and neither does lymphedema. Learn more. Ask questions. Do research. Understand your body. Address your concerns.

Your feet are the foundation of your body.
When the fascia in the feet becomes tight, compressed, or restricted, it can influence how the ankles, knees, hips, and spine move and function. Fascia release for the feet helps create more space, improve mobility, and support better movement patterns throughout the body.

Did you know that thyroid issues are very common in those with lipedema? Even if your doctor said your thyroid is "fine", it may not be. Doctors rarely look at thyroid numbers in comparison to each other and rarely check thyroid antibodies even though Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroid. If you have thyroid symptoms like those below or classic symptoms like unexplained fatigue, thinning hair, and constipation, thyroid could be the reason. It took me 20 years to finally convince a doctor to do a FULL thyroid panel and now my Hashimoto's is in remission. Do your research, advocate for yourself, fire your doctor if he or she isn't listening and helping. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18HZZU3wSs/

Your body has been whispering thyroid red flags for years. Here are 10 signals written on your body right now that your doctor will never look for.

Your outer eyebrows thinning. Not your whole eyebrow. The outer THIRD specifically. Queen Anne's sign. One of the oldest clinical markers of hypothyroidism documented for over a century. Your endocrinologist looks at a screen. Not your face.

Your heels cracking despite every cream. T3 controls skin cell turnover. When it drops the thick skin on your heels can't regenerate. Cracks form that no topical treatment fixes.

Your tongue scalloped with bite marks on the edges. Macroglossia. Fluid accumulation from low T3 swelling the tongue against the teeth.

Your nails ridged vertically. Not horizontally from injury. VERTICALLY from slowed growth and impaired keratin production.

Your skin on your shins feeling thick and waxy. Pretibial myxedema. Sugar-protein deposits under the skin from inadequate T3.

Your morning face puffy then deflating by afternoon. Fluid redistribution from myxedema that gravity moves during the day.

Your palms slightly yellow-orange tinted. Low T3 impairs the conversion of beta-carotene to vitamin A. Carotenoids accumulate in the skin.

Your hair breaking at the shoulders instead of growing past. Follicles producing weaker keratin from nutrient malabsorption.

Your outer ear canals feeling dry and flaky. Sebum production drops with low T3. Ears are early indicators.

Your armpit and leg hair growing slower or stopping. Body hair follicles shut down from T3 deficiency before scalp hair does.

10 signals. All on your body right now. All visible without a blood test. All ignored because your doctor looks at a screen instead of the patient sitting in front of her.

The book that teaches you to read what your body is writing is in the link in bio. Your body has been speaking for years. This book finally translates.

Yes! If you are eating foods that cause you inflammation you cannot reverse inflammation through vitamins or herbs or a therapy intended to reduce inflammation. Even if you are eating well but have "cheat days", you are feeding that inflammation and never giving your body a chance. If you are eating something "healthy", but YOUR body doesn't like it and it causes you inflammation, you are continuing the cycle. This is what I address with clients...whole foods that are nutritiously dense to give your body what it needs to heal, rest, and restore instead of starve, react, and hurt.

It's a journey I've been focused on for the last couple of years. Focusing on rest and nourishing instead of obsessing about everything surrounding my multiple chronic conditions has been healing in a way all the other things weren't. You deserve to extend yourself some grace and gentleness. (Thanks Sondra Teer for this reminder!)
