It’s Therapy Thursday and today I want to discuss what The Lymphedema Treatment Act (LTA) is and why it matters 💫
First things first: PRIOR to the LTA taking effect in January 01, 2024
❌ Medicare generally did not cover:
* Daytime compression garments (arm sleeves, stockings, gauntlets)
* Nighttime compression garments
* Most replacement garments
* Many self-management compression supplies patients needed at home
This was NOT good considering compression garments are one of the most important treatments for lymphedema, lipedema, and chronic venous insufficiency.
Thankfully, when the LTA was passed and took effect in 2024, Medicare expanded coverage to include compression garments for day and night, bandaging supplies for manual lymph drainage (MLD), and pneumatic compression pumps.
THIS IS HUGE because most major insurance carriers look to Medicare’s guidelines when they make their own.
Compression, MLD, and the pump are PREVENTATIVE measures but also extremely necessary for patients to be active in their own care, and take control of their diagnosis.
Please like and share. It’s up to us to educate and spread awareness so we can get more people the help and supplies they need to improve their quality of life. 🦋💜🫶
