I’ve been there too! I was given the diagnoses, the prescriptions, and sent out the door with nothing else but a reminder to sleep more.

I experienced some pretty terrible medication side effects, which I assumed meant I was really broken, and it took me years to learn how to advocate for myself. A functional medicine, root-cause approach to my health changed my life.

This is one of the reasons I do what I do now, working as an integrative health coach and functional nutritionist at a trauma-informed holistic counseling center. I’ve experienced full remission of my illness, and thanks to the support of an integrative medical practitioner, I halted the progression of one of my kids’ diagnoses as well.

Live Beyond Your Label is the resource I wish I had back when I was struggling with symptoms related to the mental illnesses I was diagnosed with.

This book is for anyone who has ever felt limited by a label or is looking for new tools to help them on their healing journey.

The labels we receive can be diagnostic, given to us or by us… and initially, they can be helpful to make sense of symptoms. But many people become discouraged by their labels. Often they compartmentalize and disconnect from mind, body, and spirit.

If your workout today looks less like pushing and more like softening, that’s okay.

I spent an hour of my morning breathing and moving slowly, reminding myself that bravery can look like welcoming discernment. Bravery can be choosing the hard thing. And sometimes the hard thing isn’t action. It’s staying in the present.

Reminder: your body is a temple, not a remodeling project. You’ve been given everything you need within your body to create an integrated connection that supports you in any season. Movement is an incredible way to reconnect mind, body, and spirit.

Self-care is stewardship of your body’s needs. It’s choosing partnership and presence instead of disconnecting and pushing through, which only makes symptoms worse.

As a survivor of mental illness, I had to learn this at a very young age.

I share a lot about rest and self-care in the last chapter of my book, Live Beyond Your Label, where I combine Scripture, psychology, and my own story and experience coaching hundreds of individuals in their health journeys.

If this is a three-day weekend for you, I hope you take some time to slow down for intentional nourishment of your body. You’ve been given one body to live out your God-given purpose. Be gentle with it.

You’re not broken. I believed that lie for so long, when I was told I had a chemical imbalance that would always plague me and my only hope was medication. They didn’t tell me my brain and body could change.

Thankfully we have better research now than we did when I was experiencing my darkest days. We have more tools to provide support, tools I post about all the time—because they changed my life.

God designed us with bodies that are wired for healing and connection to HIM. He is our primary nourishment. This is a hill I will die on.

His masterful design demonstrates his goodness, from the way our nervous system communicates to the changes the brain makes with the slightest adjustment of input.
