🩺You can exercise with almost any medical condition … and almost every condition will improve with exercise… HOWEVER … it is important to make sure you are taking steps to exercise safely.
👩‍⚕️It is never a bad idea to check in with your doctor to make sure you are good to start something new.
🏃🏽‍♂️If you have never trained for a race before, start low and go slow ➡️ using a walk to run 5k progression is probably best.

Back pain is all too common! 😖
Here are a few quick suggestions from a physical therapy perspective on how to manage your pain at home when it first flares. 🏠🙆‍♀️🏡

🚩🚩There are several “red flags” when home management may not be appropriate and you should seek medical attention immediately 👩‍⚕️🏥🩻 (ex. new difficult difficulty controlling your urine or a stool -leakage or retention, numbness in your groin, numbness or weakness in both legs at the same time, etc)… aside from those with red flags symptoms, most people can start self-care at home. If your symptoms are not improving with home care after a few weeks or progressively worsening, you should also get seen. 🚩🚩

The literature is clear, the most effective treatment for back pain is gentle movement 🙆‍♂️ and gentle aerobic exercise 🏃‍♂️as tolerated. Incorporating physical therapy early help minimize pain symptoms, return you normal activities 🏌️‍♂️sooner and help prevent future flares.
