Phi Lambda Sigma By peer recognition, the Society encourages participation in all pharmacy activities. Phi Lambda Sigma honors leadership.

The purpose of Phi Lambda Sigma, also known as the national Pharmacy Leadership Society, is to promote the development of leadership qualities, especially among pharmacy students. Since membership crosses fraternal and organizational lines, the Society does not compete with other pharmacy organizations. Members are selected by peer recognition. No greater honor can be bestowed upon an individual than to be recognized as a leader by one’s peers. Such recognition instills and enhances self-confidence, encourages the less active student to a more active role and promotes greater effort toward the advancement of pharmacy.

Did you know that in the 1960s, women made up only 8% of all U.S. pharmacists? 🤯

Today on , we are celebrating a massive shift in healthcare. Women now comprise over 60% of the pharmacist workforce and earn the majority of PharmD degrees!

This incredible journey started all the way back in 1727 when Elizabeth Gooking Greenleaf—a mother of 12—opened an apothecary shop in Boston and became America's first female pharmacist.

Today, we stand on the shoulders of trailblazers like her, Mary Jacobi (who earned the first formal pharmacy degree in 1863), and Mary Munson Runge (the first woman and African American APhA president).

To all the women making over 80% of family healthcare decisions and the women behind the counter delivering trusted care—Happy National Women Pharmacist Day! 💊✨
