DOCTOR!! Last week I graduated from Viridis Graduate Institute with a Doctorate in Ecological Psychology. My thesis is called ‘Follow the Flowers; What the World’s Tallest Flowering Trees Teach Us About Being Human’ and I am thrilled to be embarking on an adventure to visit the forest that I learned from in Tasmania.
Idyll was the vessel that held me and supported me while I was in school, and every single one of you who came in, bought a plant and shared a story is a part of this milestone. I am FULL of gratitude as I let all the lessons synthesize, decompose, and rest so that they can become something new.
My shop was a place where I got to celebrate artists and share my deep love for plants, and in hindsight, it was the space I needed when I was making art. I am excited to give myself some time to go walk around and look for flowers, with the space to write and create my own art again.
And this platform here will be snippets of that mixed with posts looking for the artists in cities around the world! There are soooo many of us, creating behind the scenes, and I believe wholeheartedly that the more we lift each other up, the easier it will be to find our people.
A big part of my thesis involves shifting the emphasis off of what we ‘do’ towards a vision of success that involves how well we collaborate with others. As Robin Wall Kimmerer says, ‘All flourishing is mutual!’
While I am unbelievably proud to have wrapped up the projects I set out to finish (and to officiallly be called Dr.Bangs lol) I am the most excited about being able to ‘be’ in the world, with enough time to walk slowly and look for flowers, and experience the luminous ‘rest’ we all talk about.
My hope is that in doing so, my little life can serve as a reminder of a way the world really works, as she crafts clouds from the ocean, and flowers from the dry earth. That’s the world I believe in that idyll was a little taste of. And that’s the one I want to share with you.
