Sometimes, people ask too much of us.

Tell me about a time when you recognized that you’d “set yourself on fire” for someone who only wanted you to burn so they wouldn’t have to?

Recently (like last night “recently”), I took my website live.

Is it the gorgeous, welcoming space I envisioned in my mind?

Of course not!! But it’s up, it has pages and some information about me, some “products”, and contact information. It will be a place where I can now add or tweak or fix things in the small pockets of time I have rather than feeling shame about not having a website.

I am celebrating my baby, not-fully-evolved website. It is not doing “big” website things, but I am not ashamed.

I have plans to add an intake form for 1:1 coaching & counseling, more pictures, a scheduler, Amazon affiliate links, future podcasts, and links.

But if you see something you think can be added, I’d love to hear that too.

I am not ok right now.

That’s tough for me to write — to share — as a healer, but it’s true. My mental health has taken some serious blows since May, and that has taken its toll despite my best efforts.

I’m leaning on my support systems. I have pulled back & am practicing self-care. I have sought professional help and am in the process of getting medical treatment, so I’m hopeful.

But today? Now? I’m not ok.

And that is ok. I don’t like it, but I’m not ashamed. I am meeting my commitments and doing what I can. I have “caught” the slide early enough that it may not become a full-on dark place, but if it does? That, too, is ok.

It’s ok to not be ok. Because that’s where we have the opportunity to grow. To heal.

Healing is not a pretty linear curve upward when you see it up close; it’s much more volatile. Like the stock market or an ocean wave. I’m new at surfing here, so it’s a bit scary. But I’ve got the right tools and excellent life guards on duty.

I’m not ok and that’s ok.

We talk a lot in our society about self-care and it’s importance. Make no mistake that I think self-care is critical to overall well-being.

But what does self-care mean exactly?

While self-care absolutely CAN be about luxuriating in a bath or mani/pedis, it’s often so much less glamorous and fun.

What about choosing yourself over your team on the fly while the world — and your expectant country — watches?

That’s what I saw Simone Biles do on camera tonight. Moreover, I saw a young woman recognize that she was not ok, communicate that to her coaches and medical team, and then make the decision that she wasn’t going to jeopardize her physical health — and candidly, her team’s chances for success — by doubting her assessment of her abilities. She trusted herself enough to know that she wasn’t “present” mentally, and that she should not do the difficult routines that she has worked on for the last few years. She let go of a dream for herself in that moment and knew it was the right thing to do, and so does anyone watching her face during that vault.

But what’s most impressive to me is not only the ability to make the self-care decision to not compete, but to then become the best teammate and support system for the athletes who DID compete. She didn’t hide in the locker room, she said, “I can’t do what we thought, but I can do these things…” and then did.

I want to advocate for myself the way I just saw the GOAT do it: with little argument and plenty of compassion for myself and the people who don’t know what I’m going through.

It’s your truth. It’s your journey. Truth Walking.

In order to be in a position to help others, we absolutely MUST take care of ourselves *first.*

This is a core concept of Truth Walking — and it’s one of the toughest lessons to live.

Your cup must runeth over if you’re going to be able to help. Always. If your cup is half empty, you can’t effectively give.

This doesn’t look like much, but today I have no appetite, am sick to my stomach with stress and worry, feeling helpless in the face of a reality I cannot change or control.

What I can control? Me. I’m drinking water as an act of defiance. I am eating this meal because food fuels my body. THAT is how I care for my loved ones; I care for myself.

It’s not pretty and it doesn’t have to be in order to be effective.

This is how I demonstrate my love, by taking care of the person whom my people love.

Your truth shapes your reality!

Absolutely! It’s rarely “this OR that” in life.

Today I weep for the Mothers. Those whose children die before them.
Some never lived outside the womb.
Some were taken by accident or act.
Some unsuccessfully fought terrible physical disease with bravery and didn’t survive.
Some battled their demons for years and lost.
And some died because they were treated differently due to the color of their skin.

All mamas have the grace of my mother’s heart, but that last category?

They get my mama bear. That fierce creature whom no land animal wants to cross. That creature whose battling spirit is awesome. And loud. And dangerous.

She knows you’re there and she is ready as she watches. She awaits your decision as confrontation is not her preference. She’d rather have you respect her family, but she is ready if you don’t.

I actually think for the most part that people convince themselves rather than pretend.

When someone is convinced that you are something, it’s much easier to move toward harm. They are SURE you deserve [whatever awful thing].

By speaking up and not accepting the small misconceptions, you reject the premise.

Pretending is imagination and has never harmed me.

Someone else’s erroneous conviction? That’s destroyed too many things.

You truth. Your journey.
Truth Walking.
