Your midwife is not your doula, but many women hire a midwife and expect her to be one.

This doesn't mean she won't hold your hand, encourage you through a contraction, help you find a more comfortable position, or remind you just how capable you are. She will do that many times throughout your labor.

But her primary responsibility is to monitor your well-being and your baby's, assess how labor is progressing, recognize complications, and make clinical decisions when needed.

And that is a BIG responsibility that requires her full attention. Even the most attentive, loving midwife cannot be in two places at once or give uninterrupted hands-on support while simultaneously attending to every clinical responsibility.

Your doula has a different role. She's there to offer continuous support throughout labor. She can help you navigate the intensity, suggest comfort measures, offer reassurance, support your partner, and help you feel informed, heard, and cared for.

Our roles are complementary, not interchangeable.

If you have considered hiring a doula but haven't, consider this your sign.

📢 CPR Classes added to my fall Workshop schedule!
I know that it can feel scary 🫣 to think about springing to action in an emergency. This is why I love to teach my 🛟 CPR class for lay responders!
These skills are for everyone because these situations can happen to anyone.
You will leave this class feeling calm and confident 💪, knowing what to do in an emergency. Visit my website to learn more about my class and to register - I have both an 👩‍🏫 in-person option and a 👩‍💻 virtual option. Spots are limited, so be sure to grab one if you want to come!

A 2025 study published in AJOG adds powerful, up-to-date data showing associations between doula care and improved maternal and newborn outcomes.

Key Maternal Outcomes:

More vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC): For every 100 patients who received doula care, there were 15 to 34 additional VBACs compared with those without doula care.

Higher postpartum follow-up attendance: 5 to 6 more per 100 received postpartum office visits.

Key Neonatal / Infant Outcomes

Increased exclusive breastfeeding rates: Babies whose families had doula support were more likely to breastfeed exclusively.

Fewer preterm births (and early preterm births): Doula-supported births showed a reduction in preterm birth rates.

In short, the study links doula care with improvements in birth outcomes — across birth mode (more VBACs), infant health (less prematurity), and early infant care (breastfeeding, postpartum follow-up).
