One of the biggest things that speeds up the aging process is not enough nutrient-rich, oxygenated blood reaching the tissues that need it most.

The body relies on strong circulation to deliver oxygen, nutrients, and healing compounds while clearing away waste. Over time, stress, inactivity, aging, or conditions like diabetes can reduce blood flow — especially in the microcirculation (those tiny vessels that matter most). The result? Faster tissue wear, slower healing, and more fatigue.

That’s where therapeutic massage makes a real difference. By gently working your muscles and fascia, massage improves blood flow, supports lymphatic drainage, reduces tension that restricts vessels, and helps your body repair and rejuvenate more efficiently. Many clients notice better energy, faster recovery, and even healthier-looking skin after regular sessions.

Your circulation is the foundation of feeling vibrant at any age! Ready to give your tissues the nourishment they deserve? Book your next session and support your body’s natural healing systems.

A 2025 randomized controlled trial with 150 athletes (team, strength, endurance & individual sports) found that bi-weekly 40-minute deep tissue massage sessions over 8 weeks delivered impressive results:

• Faster muscle recovery
• Better athletic performance
• Improved flexibility & joint mobility (especially lumbar, knee & shoulder)
• Strongest benefits for team & strength-sport athletes

The study also showed that longer session durations within the protocol correlated with significantly better flexibility outcomes, and correlated with the best outcomes in strength, mobility, and overall function.

Practical takeaway for your practice: When working with athletes, consider recommending a bi-weekly deep tissue protocol focused on their primary sport demands. Prioritize thorough work on high-use areas like the lumbar spine, hips, and shoulders for maximum recovery and performance gains.

Have you noticed better results with bi-weekly vs. weekly sessions in your athletic clients?

When a client reports numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness, it's important to remember that not all neuropathy has the same cause, or the same treatment approach.

Entrapment neuropathies, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or thoracic outlet syndrome, are often localized and related to mechanical compression, tissue restrictions, or repetitive stress. These conditions may respond well to massage therapy techniques.

Systemic neuropathies, on the other hand, are often associated with underlying conditions such as diabetes, chemotherapy, autoimmune disorders, or other neurological diseases. These symptoms are frequently bilateral and symmetrical, requiring a different approach focused on symptom management and appropriate referral when necessary.

In this EDU-TALK video, Scott Raymond explains how massage therapists can better differentiate between these presentations, improve clinical decision-making, and recognize important red flags such as progressive weakness, muscle atrophy, or loss of coordination. Understanding when massage may help, and when to refer, is an essential clinical skill.

If your thumbs seem to complain louder on Monday than any other day, you're probably not imagining it. After a couple of days away from hands-on work, many massage therapists notice their hands, thumbs, and wrists feel less warmed up during the first few sessions of the week. Combined with the repetitive loading involved in deep tissue, trigger point, and other focused techniques, that transition back into a full schedule can make existing irritation more noticeable.

Two simple habits may help:

• 60-Second Warm-Up. Before your first client, gently shake out your hands, perform 10 slow thumb circles in each direction, and follow with 10 wrist flexion and extension movements. This helps mobilize the joints and prepare the tissues for repetitive work.

• Hydration + Micro-Breaks. Start your day well hydrated and continue drinking water throughout your shift. Between every few clients, take 10 seconds to shake out your hands, stretch your fingers, and reset your posture. Small breaks can help reduce accumulated tension over the course of the day.

Remember, persistent thumb pain is often linked to workload, body mechanics, grip force, and overuse, not just a busy Monday. Protecting your hands with smart habits today can help support a longer, healthier career tomorrow.
