Dr. Cara traveled with Rene Moore, IBCLC out to Florida to present on the topic of tongue tie and reattachment at the American Laser Study Club symposium.

In order to start to make progress with other professionals in the world of tongue tie, we need to address our shortcomings as much as we celebrate our successes. Reattachment is the white elephant in the room.

Dr. Cara suggests that there are five causes of reattachment: 1) Timing of release, 2) Healing process of the body, 3) Lack of follow-up care/bodywork, 4) Not releasing all ties at the same time, and 5) Release techniques. It is SO important that we start to examine our practices to make certain our patients are fully ready for the release to optimize outcomes. A prepared patient, mindful procedure, and appropriate timing are crucial.

Being humble and honest with not only ourselves and each other, but also our patients, ensures that we are constantly trying to improve.

Notice the heart shaped tongue with the lift, the tight lingual frenulum, and surprising blood vessels behind the mucus membrane. Having a knowledgeable release provider, who is methodical and meticulous can make a huge difference.

Why CO2 laser? As you can see major blood vessels can appear right below the mucus membrane. Without magnifying loupes and an amazing tool, it would have been very easy to cut through these vessels, potentially causing a large bleed. Thankfully, we were able to carefully incise around both blood vessels, completely releasing the tie, with minimal blood loss.
