I had a good, but unfortunate, reminder of the importance of listening to my body and really paying attention to what works best for me.
I was teaching classes, training clients, and finally fitting in my own workouts when I suddenly tweaked my low back on one side. Seemingly at first to have come out of nowhere, I was surprised and in a lot of pain.
Since I know that movement (slow and careful) heals, I immediately hit the floor and tried all the stretches I know to release the intense rigidity and pain in my muscles. When stretching resulted in zero relief, I got scared.
After more self-care, stretching/heating/icing yielded little change in pain level and range of motion, I made an appointment with an Orthopedic Dr.
Although I didn’t get any answers or real guidance as to the extent of my injury in our 4-minute consultation, I already knew intuitively that this was a soft tissue issue and I had just been pushing my body in unsafe ways.
As I continue to improve (slowly), I’m reminded of the importance of paying attention. Years of athletics, training, stagnant work environments (my life before becoming a PT), as well as the tolls of child-birth have created imbalances and over-uses throughout my body. The importance of MOVING WELL is not defined by the intensity of exercises, but more on the INTENTION.
