Don't forget to check out this awesome piece by John Bartell 3 years ago! Updated Spinal Cord Injury Active Network Share-A-Chair shop photos in the comments!

We are still accepting donated lightweight manual wheelchairs(although pretty picky to sizes and quality needed), refurbishing, delivering and fitting, and changing many lives with our Share-A-Chair program!

Don't mind the pandemic hair and beard! 🤣🤣🤣

We have shifted some gears lately and received $15,000 in grants from Craig H. Neilsen Foundation and Center for Independent Living - Berkeley specifically for COVID-19 RELIEF.

We're excited to announce 2 grants:
$250 financial relief and $100 At-Home Health & Fitness Starter Kit or Reimbursement.

You must have a Spinal Cord Injury and live within Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, or Yolo Counties. Both grants are available to apply for now and we would encourage all who qualify to apply as soon as possible.

Through a partnership with Craig H. Neilsen Foundation and The CIL in Berkeley to provide a $250 financial relief grant from COVID-19 and a second grant for up to $100 At-home starter health and fitness workout kit.

Must read article about our good friend Joseph Bello and the amazing scholarship he received from the Strauss Foundation to help us educate SCI survivors and their families on wheelchair terminology, maintenance, and proper fitting for the newly injured. Also, to share our Share-A-Chair program with other organizations nationwide so they can serve their communities as we do! Thank you Joseph!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Six years ago, a split-second mistake on the sands of Oceano Dunes forever altered the life of Joseph Bello when the then 17-year old was left paralyzed from an ATV accident while on vacation. The incident left Bello in a self-described fog as he was forced to face the reality of life as a quadriple...

IMPORTANT COVID-19 INFORMATION for SCI:

Respiratory information for Spinal Cord Injury survivors and higher risks with our compromised respiratory systems. Thanks to a friend of our Network, Dr. Bret Kennedy, PT, DPT, for sharing these first 6 slides with crucial information in regards to problems, management, and capacity for many different injury levels.

The last 3 slides are from our friend, Dr. Lee Amari, RT, RRT, about the importance to avoid contact and all crowds, clean and preventive tasks, breathing exercises, and what to do if you feel symptoms or believe you were exposed to the virus.

These show that as SCI survivors we need to really take COVID-19 seriously and be aware of our surroundings and symptoms.

Our very important COVID-19 Update:

We understand there is a Shelter-in-place already for most of the counties we serve. We are taking this very serious as we are and work with those that are higher risk with compromised respiratory systems. We have suspended all of our programs as currently performed until May 1st unless otherwise updated.

This is hard for us because there are still needs for our programs, probably more so now than ever. But due to our work being close in-person mentor interaction in hospitals, hands-on wheelchair fitting for our Share-A-Chair recipients, and group attendance throughout our meet-ups and events we know this is the right thing for everyone's safety.

On Monday March 9th, our Board of Directors collectively decided to postpone our Annual April Poker fundraiser until possibly August or September. Also, with the start of the season postponed, unfortunately we decided not to plan our Annual A's game fundraiser.

These are 2 of our large events for us to raise funds to support our programs, but we know we are completely doing the right thing as the safety of Network's volunteers, recipients, supporters, and higher risk community is the utmost importance!

In the meantime, our work doesn't stop as we continue to work on our administration, general operations, program development and marketing, and we still want to offer mentoring via email, phone or zoom calls over this time. Again, we currently will not be able to deliver ♿ through our Share-A-Chair program until further notice.

Thanks to everyone for their support, understanding, patience, being safe and protecting others during this time!

Last night we had a great presentation from Pacific ADA Center's Jan Garrett with the 9th region of the ADA National Network. Despite the outbreak of the Coronavirus COVID-19, we as a group decided to continue with our meeting and had a great turnout, amazing questions, and lots of interaction that the 2-hour meeting wasn't enough time.

If you still have questions or something comes up if you're in Arizona. California, Hawaii, Nevada, Pacific Basin Territories of American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam you can visit or contact their office (800) 949-4232

Thank you to all who help with planning our meet-ups, the attendees, and our sponsor for always supplying us with plenty of food at dinner hour!

Note: April and May meetings may be cancelled due to COVID-19 and the risks for our group. Please follow our facebook group for updates. Thank you and be safe! @ Ed Roberts Campus
