A couple of weeks ago I ran into my old high school baseball coach from San Pasqual. This guy taught me a lot. I was too proud at the time to be a good listener. We butt heads many many times during practices and games during the two seasons I played for him as we both thought we knew better than the other how the game is supposed to be played. I didn’t do well with authority (or any coach/teacher for that matter) back then and wasn’t a very good teammate or sportsman to him or the guys I played with. He was a fiery competitor as was I and loved the game just as equally.

Years later, I’d see Coach Mac from time to time at our local church Emmanuel Faith. He was always down on the first level front right of the pulpit in the sanctuary. As I matured (albeit slowly) swallowed my pride and moved past my bitterness toward how things played out, I started saying hello to the “old man”, shaking his hand with respect instead of resentment. He was a much nicer person than who I had remembered during high school.

Occasionally, and by that I mean once upon a blue moon, I see Coach Mac around town. Grateful to have crossed paths with him this time around, apologized for being a hard ass and he was kind enough to take a selfie with me…with the one caveat I wasn’t allowed to throw darts at it 😁
