Let’s talk about something a lot of people don’t think about: cleaning new jewelry before wearing it.

I recently did a simple soak test on a brand new piece of jewelry purchased from an online retailer like Amazon, and the amount of visible residue that came off was eye-opening.

Even though jewelry may arrive looking clean and polished, it is not sterile.

Why?

Most retail jewelry goes through multiple steps before it reaches you:

Manufactured in bulk production environments
Handled during polishing, packaging, and shipping
Stored in warehouses and distribution centers
Packaged for sale without sterilization.

Because of this, jewelry can carry:

Dust and microscopic debris
Residual polishing compounds
Oils from handling
Environmental contaminants

Why this matters for piercings:

Introducing unclean jewelry into a piercing, especially a healing one can increase the risk of:

Irritation
Inflammation
Infection
Prolonged healing times

Best practice before wearing new jewelry:

Wash with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap

Rinse thoroughly to remove all residue

Allow it to fully dry before use

For fresh or healing piercings, it’s always safest to use professionally sterilized, implant-grade jewelry from a reputable studio.

Bottom line:

If it hasn’t been sterilized, it shouldn’t be treated as sterile no matter where it came from.
