Look Beyond Where It Hurts

A client points to her knee.

Where do you begin?

Of course we pay attention to the knee.

But we can also become curious about what's happening below it.

The foot.

The ankle.

The lower leg.

How the client stands.

How she transfers weight.

How she moves through the ground.

One of the most valuable skills we can develop as bodyworkers isn't simply learning more techniques.

It's learning to ask better questions of the body.

That's what we'll explore together in Rooted Movement.

We'll look at the feet and legs through movement and hands-on work and consider how what we observe can inform the choices we make at the treatment table.

If you're a massage therapist who enjoys anatomy, movement and understanding the relationships within the body, I'd love to have you join me.

“Why MELT at a Blood Sugar Workshop?”

You might be wondering…

What does MELT have to do with a workshop about blood sugar?

Quite a bit, actually—because supporting our health isn't only about what's on our plate.

Movement matters too.

During Blood Sugar Balance, I'll guide you through a gentle MELT experience designed to help you slow down, notice your body and explore simple self-care you can continue at home.

Ali will bring the nutrition perspective, and together we'll look at wellbeing from several directions:

Nourishment. Movement. Recovery. Awareness.

Because self-care isn't one thing you do.

It's learning how to support yourself from several directions—how you nourish, move, recover, listen and respond.

And you'll leave with your own large soft ball and Hand & Foot maps so your experience doesn't end when the workshop does.

“What Is Your Energy Trying to Tell You?”

That afternoon slump.

The craving that seems to appear out of nowhere.

Feeling hungry shortly after eating.

Reaching for another cup of coffee because you simply need to keep going.

We often treat these experiences as annoyances to push through.

But what if we became curious about them instead?

Your body's energy patterns can give you useful information about nourishment, stress, sleep, movement and daily habits.

That's one of the reasons Ali and I created Blood Sugar Balance.

We're not interested in giving you another list of foods you “can't” eat.

We want to help you better understand your body so you can make choices that support it.

Because self-care begins with paying attention.

What Are the Feet Telling You?

When a client is on your table, how often do you look at their feet before you begin working?

Not simply for tension.

For information.

How are they meeting the ground?

How does weight travel through the legs?

What happens above the feet when that relationship changes?

In Rooted Movement, we'll step away from treating the body as a collection of individual parts and explore how the feet and legs participate in whole-body movement.

You'll have opportunities to observe, feel, move and then bring those observations back to the treatment table.

The goal isn't to give you another protocol to memorize.

It's to give you another way to see.

“It’s Not Just About Sugar”

Have you ever eaten a meal—and found yourself hungry again surprisingly soon?

Or experienced an afternoon energy crash, suddenly wanted something sweet, or wondered why some meals seem to keep you satisfied longer than others?

Blood sugar regulation isn't simply about avoiding sugar.

It's influenced by the way we combine foods, how often we eat, movement, stress, sleep and the everyday rhythms that support our bodies.

And here's the good news:

Supporting blood sugar doesn't have to mean following another restrictive diet.

On September 12, Functional Nutritionist Ali Gibson, FNTP, and I are bringing nutrition, movement and self-care together for Blood Sugar Balance, the first workshop in our Fall Wellness Series.

We'll talk about practical ways to nourish yourself, understand your body's signals and create habits that can actually fit into your life.

The Feet Tell a Story

As massage therapists, we're often introduced to the body through the place our client says hurts.

“My hip is tight.”
“My low back hurts.”
“My knee has been bothering me.”

But what happens when we begin looking beyond the symptom?

The feet and legs influence how we meet the ground, transfer load and organize movement throughout the body. What we're seeing on the table may be only one part of a much larger movement story.

Rooted Movement is a hands-on continuing education class designed to help massage therapists explore the relationship between the feet, legs and the way the body organizes movement.

We'll combine observation, movement and hands-on exploration to help you develop another layer of curiosity when working with your clients.
