Some information on what it takes to be a Pool and Spa Repair Technician:
Pool and spa repair is a specialized field which requires a combination of practical work experience and technical knowledge. Since there is not currently a school, or training program for pool and spa technicians, skills must be learned through apprenticing with a licensed technician. To be proficient in the field, a technician must master concepts including plumbing, electrical systems, pumps, motors, and filtration. Additionally a technician must master troubleshooting problems, as well as leak detection. In Washington state, an electrical license is required for a technician to work independently. Obtaining an electrical license requires documenting approximately 2500 hours as an electrical trainee with the Washington
Department of Labor and Industry. Subsequently, it is necessary to pass an exam based on the National Electrical Code, and WAC laws. Once a technician is licensed, he/she may independently execute the broad range of technical knowledge and skills required in the pool and spa repair industry.
