What happens to a Yin practice when you remove one of the things we rely on most?

Sight. 👀

An eye mask takes away some of the usual visual noise. No watching the teacher. No checking the person beside you. No wondering what your pose looks like.

You get to pay more attention to what it feels like instead.

That’s the inspiration behind Inward Bound, a 90-minute Blindfolded Yin + Kava experience at Hot Yoga Vancouver.

We’ll begin by sharing kava together, then move into a long Yin practice with the option to wear an eye mask and explore pratyāhāra, the yogic practice of drawing attention inward.

Choice matters, so both the kava and eye mask are completely optional.

3 Yin postures that already hold all of Dragon Splits inside them.

Splits isn’t one big stretch. It’s a few areas opening at the same time. So before I offer it as a peak pose, I give each area its own turn.

1️⃣ Dragon Tail
The front of the back hip, the part that lengthens behind you in splits.

2️⃣ Half Caterpillar
The back of the front leg, the part that reaches forward.

3️⃣ Half Saddle
The front of the thigh, so the back leg can extend without a fight.

Now for Dragon Splits because students aren’t learning a brand new shape. They’re putting together three they’ve already felt.

*Hold each shape 3-5min*

It’s true that Dragon Splits isn’t for everyone. And it doesn’t need to be.

Many students love exploring their own version supported with props. Others stay with the prep postures, which target the same areas.

Same areas, same time under tension, no chasing the deepest shape. That’s yin.

Yin teachers, 3 acupressure points can turn your next class into a bedtime routine.

Save this for the next time a student tells you they can’t sleep.

1. KI-1 YǑNG QUÁN, on the sole of the foot just below the space between the first two toes

2. HT-7 SHÉN MÉN, at the wrist crease just below the pinky

3. LV-3 TÀI CHŌNG, on top of the foot between the big toe and second toe

Yin is already about less. Less effort, less tension, longer holds. Acupressure gives a busy mind something small to focus on while the body lets go.

And if you’re the one lying awake replaying your day, come be the student for once.

There’s a whole Yin class hiding inside Cat Pulling Tail!

It’s asking for a lot for a pose that looks like lying down.

Your top hip flexes while your bottom hip extends + your knee bends (quads!). Add spinal rotation and a little backbend, and you’ve got five things happening at once.

That’s why I consider it an advanced Yin pose.

This sequence explores those movements separately before bringing together the whole shebang.

But watch how I get into it. 👀

I start from Sphinx instead of a supine twist. That little leg shimmy helps me find hip extension before settling into the pose. If your bottom knee tends to tuck in, try exploring this way in.

Hold each posture for 3–5 minutes, practice both sides, and voilà! A whole Yin class.

🌿 Hi, I’m Abigail, a stroke survivor and yoga educator. Learning to practice in my post-stroke body taught me the value of having another way in. That perspective shapes how I teach.

Your go-to yoga practice might be giving you more of what you already have. 👀

In Āyurveda, like increases like. Opposing qualities encourage balance.

The teachers in my Āyurveda workshop at the Inner Peace Yoga School 200-hour training got so creative with this principle. Here are a few of them sharing what they came up with.

🌀 Vāta: choose steady, grounding options. I loved their use of blocks to create a sense of containment.

🔥 Pitta: soften the effort and explore a little less depth. Leave room to relax within the pose.

🌎 Kapha: build movement and challenge gradually to invite warmth and alertness.

Use this as a guide, not a diagnosis. Trust your body’s feedback and your lived experience.

Thanks Alissa Kepas Christensen for the care you put into your 200-hour curriculum. It shows in the thoughtful, creative teachers you’re preparing to serve Utah County!

If your jaw is still doing a plank in Śavāsana, come roll with us. 👀

Try massage balls to tend to your tissues for tension relief when stretching isn’t cutting it.

The DO’s:

✅ Use soft balls with give like Tune Up Fitness
✅ Move slowly & intentionally
✅ Keep breathing with steady rhythm
✅ Roll before & after yoga
✅ Stay hydrated

The DON’Ts:

❌ Use hard balls like lacrosse balls
❌ Go fast or push through pain
❌ Put the balls on your spine
❌ Hold your breath
❌ Overwork the same spot

Tension builds up in your fascia, not just your muscles! This myofascial self-massage can make all the difference.

CAST YOUR VOTE for a future episode: comment SHOULDERS, FEET, or HIPS.

🤍 If you want to move with more ease, tend to your tissues, and make self-care part of your day, you’re in the right place.

Toe squat but make it 16 different flavors! 🤯🍨

I had a blast brainstorming these in Juliana Larochelle | Creative Yoga Sequencing ‘s creative sequencing workshop at the Denver Yoga Summit

I wouldn’t necessarily teach every variation, but exploring them changed how I saw a pose that usually seems so static.

There’s so much possibility inside a familiar posture when you give yourself permission to experiment.

Which variation is your favorite?

Thanks for the challenge and inspiration Juliana!
