💧 Want an easy way to eat less without feeling deprived? Drink water before your meals.

Research suggests that one of the simplest weight-loss tools may already be sitting in your kitchen.

A Randomized clinical trial from Virginia Tech found that adults who drank 16 oz (500 mL) of water 30 minutes before each meal lost about 5 more pounds over 12 weeks than those who didn't, even though both groups followed the same reduced-calorie diet.

The likely reason? Drinking water before meals helps increase fullness, which may naturally reduce how many calories you eat during the meal.

💙 7 Reasons Drinking More Water Can Support Weight Loss

1️⃣ Helps curb your appetite by increasing fullness before meals.
2️⃣ May slightly boost metabolism through water-induced thermogenesis.
3️⃣ Replaces high-calorie beverages, reducing overall calorie intake.
4️⃣ Supports exercise performance by helping your muscles and joints function efficiently.
5️⃣ Helps reduce bloating and constipation by supporting healthy digestion and regular bowel movements.
6️⃣ Supports fat metabolism, as adequate hydration is needed for the body to efficiently break down stored fat.
7️⃣ Improves energy, focus, and mood by preventing dehydration-related fatigue, making healthy habits easier to maintain.

✨ Try this: Drink 16 ounces of water about 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's a simple habit that may help you feel fuller and support your overall weight-loss efforts.

💚 One important reminder: There is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss. While drinking more water can be a helpful strategy, successful weight management depends on many factors, including your medical history, medications, hormones, gut health, sleep, stress, activity level, and nutrition.

Working with a Registered Dietitian can help you develop a personalized, evidence-based plan tailored to your unique health needs, lifestyle, and goals because the best plan is the one that's designed specifically for you.

Meet the Firmicutes! 🦠🍩🥦

Some gut bacteria are especially skilled at breaking down food and extracting energy from it. Early animal studies found that transferring an “obesity-associated” gut microbiome into germ-free mice increased their body fat even when food intake was similar. These microbes may influence calorie harvest, inflammation, insulin sensitivity and the way metabolic genes are expressed.

But here’s the important part: Firmicutes are not automatically “bad bacteria.” This enormous group also includes beneficial, fiber-fermenting bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate. In humans, researchers have not consistently found that having more Firmicutes, or a higher Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio, predicts obesity.

Instead of trying to eliminate Firmicutes, focus on creating a diverse and balanced gut ecosystem:

🥦 Eat a variety of fiber-rich plants
🫘 Include beans, lentils, oats, berries, vegetables, nuts and seeds
🍞 Choose minimally processed, lower-glycemic carbohydrates
🫐 Aim for many different plant foods throughout the week
🥛 Add fermented foods when tolerated
🍩 Limit highly processed foods and excess added sugar
🚶 Move your body regularly
😴 Prioritize 7–9 hours of consistent sleep
💧 Stay adequately hydrated

Fiber helps nourish beneficial microbes and supports the production of compounds that protect the intestinal lining, regulate inflammation and influence metabolic health. Fiber interventions reliably alter gut microbial activity, although everyone’s microbiome responds differently. It is recommended to shoot for 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day.

Your daily dietary choices can help shape the environment in which your gut flora lives. 🌱

A friendly produce heads-up! 🥬🍓

As of July 13, 2026, the CDC reported 1,645 laboratory-confirmed, domestically acquired cases of cyclosporiasis across 34 states. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that infects the small intestine and can cause frequent watery diarrhea, cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite and weight loss.

The source of the current cases has not yet been confirmed. Past U.S. outbreaks have been linked to raspberries, cabbage, basil, cilantro, parsley, broccoli, snow peas, sugar snap peas and leafy greens.

What can you do?
🥦 Rinse fresh produce thoroughly under clean running water.
🍈 Wash the outside—even when you plan to peel it.
🥕 Scrub firm produce with a clean produce brush.
🚫 Don’t use soap, bleach or commercial produce wash.
🔥 When practical, cook produce to at least 158°F (70°C).
❄️ Home freezing does not reliably kill Cyclospora. Commercially frozen or canned produce and thoroughly cooked produce may be practical lower-risk choices, but always follow recall notices.

Washing may not remove every Cyclospora parasite, especially from folded or textured produce, but it is still an important food-safety step. This isn’t a reason to stop eating the fruits and vegetables you love! Keep aiming for your 6–8 servings while using a few smart food-safety habits.

What a Dietitian Eats

A sweet-savory power bowl that loves your brain, gut, and energy levels:

Greek yogurt + almonds & pistachios + h**p seeds + goji berries + wildflower honey

Simple. Satisfying. So Delicious.

Why this bowl works:

Greek yogurt: High-protein + probiotics to support gut health, muscle repair, and blood sugar balance.

Almonds & pistachios: Magnesium, vitamin E, and healthy fats for brain function, mood support, and satiety. Pistachios also bring prebiotic fiber that help to feed your healthy gut bugs.

H**p seeds: A complete plant protein with omega-3 and omega-6 fats that support inflammation balance and brain health.

Goji berries: Rich in antioxidants, iron, and carotenoids, traditionally used to support eye health and vitality.

Wildflower honey: Natural sweetness with polyphenols; a little goes a long way for flavor and quick energy.

Fun facts :

H**p seeds contain all 9 essential amino acids—rare for a plant food.

Pistachios are one of the highest-antioxidant nuts.

Pairing protein + fat + fiber helps keep cravings quiet and energy steady.

This is one of my favorite “no-cook, brain-nourishing” meals—perfect for busy days when you still want to eat with intention.

With peace, love & deliciousness,

✨ Big News from Simple Health Options ✨

I’m so excited to share that we’ve moved into a beautiful new office space and with it comes an exciting expansion of the services I offer.

Over the past several months, I’ve been working diligently behind the scenes to grow my practice in a way that allows me to support patients more deeply and more comprehensively. I’m proud to share that I am now offering nutrition counseling for mental health and addiction recovery as a Certified Addiction & Mental Health Nutrition Counselor through the Academy for Addiction and Mental Health Nutrition.

This expansion allows me to integrate amino acid therapy, mental health nutrition, and gut–brain axis support into my work—grounded in evidence-based care and focused on real, lasting healing.

Taking my practice in this direction has felt both exciting and, at times, a little scary but it’s something I feel deeply called to do. Supporting individuals struggling with mental health challenges and addiction through targeted, brain-focused nutrition is where my heart and clinical passion truly live.

I will, of course, continue seeing my current Medical Nutrition Therapy patients, while also welcoming those seeking specialized support in mental health and recovery.

This next chapter feels meaningful, aligned, and full of possibility and I’m so grateful to share it with you. 💛

• Chopped rotisserie chicken (hello, quick & easy protein!)
• Chopped dried cranberries
• Chopped celery for crunch
• Follow Your Heart avocado mayo 🥑
• Tarragon (so underrated and SO good)
• H**p hearts

Mix it all together and enjoy it:
✔️ With gluten-free crackers
✔️ In a BeFree gluten-free wrap
✔️ On a bed of greens
✔️ Or in Bibb lettuce wraps

This is what I love about simple, balanced meals—you’ve got options!
