Why Your Cells Need More NAD+ as You Age (And Why Taking NAD+ Itself Isn’t the Best Way)
As we get older, many of us notice lower energy, slower recovery, and changes in how our body handles stress and inflammation. One key player behind these shifts is a molecule called NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide).
NAD+ is essential for cellular energy production, DNA repair, and the activity of important “longevity” enzymes called sirtuins. Research shows that NAD+ levels tend to decline with age. When they drop, mitochondria (your cells’ power plants) become less efficient, DNA repair slows down, and low-grade inflammation can rise. Taking NAD+ itself — orally or even topically — is usually not very effective.
NAD+ is a relatively large and highly charged molecule. When you swallow it, digestive enzymes and stomach acid break much of it down before it can be properly absorbed. It also struggles to cross cell membranes intact. The same barrier problem limits how well plain topical NAD+ penetrates the skin.
This is why scientists and clinicians focus on NAD+ precursors instead — molecules like nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). These smaller compounds are better absorbed and can be converted into NAD+ inside your cells, where it’s actually needed. Human studies show that these precursors can raise NAD+ levels more reliably than taking NAD+ directly.
