A proper warm-up can help improve performance, enhance movement quality, and reduce injury risk before practices, games, and tournaments.

🔹Kids Summer Move Series Part 4: Balance Testing🔹
How is your child’s balance?

A simple way to check is with a single-leg balance test. If standing on one foot is challenging, don’t worry: balance is a skill that can be improved!

In this video, we assess balance with a single-leg stance and then work through a series of exercises that progress through developmental positions, from tall kneeling ➡️ half kneeling ➡️ standing, helping build the strength, coordination, and stability needed for everyday activities and sports.

Want to make it more fun? Turn balance training into a game!
🎾 Catch and throw a ball while balancing
🚶 Walk forward and backward on a straight line
🎯 Create obstacle courses or balance challenges
These activities help develop body awareness, coordination, and confidence while keeping kids engaged and active.

If you’re concerned about your child’s balance, coordination, or movement skills, our physical therapists can help identify areas for improvement and create a plan tailored to their needs.

☀️ Summer is right around the corner, which means more time outdoors and more community ambulation! Safety and confidence while navigating different environments are so important. 🚶‍♀️💪

Miss Linda and Leone went on a little stroll with our PT Brittany Vass around the building this week! They worked on safely ascending/descending curbs, stairs, and navigating graded surfaces to improve balance, mobility, and independence. 👟🦵

Every step forward counts! 🌟

🔹Kids Summer Move Series Part 3: Midline Crossing Exercises 🔹

Crossing the midline - reaching across the middle of your body with either your arm or your leg - is extremely important for development. It improves the brain’s communication between the right and left hemispheres, which translates into tasks such as reading, writing, hand dominance, and coordination. In the video, Britt demonstrates some great examples of activities you can do with your kids that can be a good mental reset when working on academic tasks. The added benefit is, it’s a great way to incorporate some physical activity in a super fun way!

🔹Kids Summer Move Series Part 2: Fun Poses for Proximal Shoulder Strength and Core Strength🔹

Who knew physical therapy exercises could be so fun?! Britt Vass, one of our skilled physical therapists that works with kiddos in the school system, demonstrates some great exercises that can be both therapeutic and fun for school-aged kids. While it may feel like a goofy and fun activity for the kids, it can actually work on improving proximal shoulder and scapular strength, as well as core strength. These gross motor skills can carry over into improving essential fine motor skills such as coloring, using utensils, and hand-writing by providing a good foundation for the upper extremities (shoulders, arms, and hands). So if you notice your kids having issues with these tasks, maybe give these animal poses and “wheelbarrow” a try!
