Raise your hand if you have ever sat in a doctor’s office, brought up a real concern, and walked out feeling dismissed.

Unfortunately… you are not alone.

Doctors are trained to treat the symptoms they see and send you on your way. But they do not always try to get to the root cause.

Like mold illness.

Yes, mold illness is real. When you live or work in a water damaged building, the mycotoxins produced by mold can trigger an inflammatory response that shows up all over the body. It has been studied in peer reviewed research, and it can look like:

Brain fog and memory issues

Fatigue that sleep does not fix

Anxiety, depression, and mood swings

Histamine reactions and new food sensitivities

Air hunger or shortness of breath

Headaches and recurring sinus problems

Joint pain and muscle aches

It can also show up alongside conditions like MCAS, POTS, and CIRS, which is part of why it gets missed for so long.

So you say you think you got sick from a water damaged building, and suddenly mold gets the air quotes treatment.

Functional medicine focuses on getting to the root cause. I listen to ALL of your symptoms, figure out what your body is trying to tell us, and we build a plan from there.

Comment PREP and I’ll send you my patient advocacy letter you can bring to your provider when talking about mold illness.

Mold illness did not come out of nowhere. It just finally has a name. For years it wore other ones. Anxiety. Chronic fatigue. IBS. Hormone imbalance. And the one so many people heard most: "it's all in your head."
So no, mold is not suddenly being blamed for everything. Two real things changed.
The first is our exposure. We changed what we build with. Plaster and solid wood were harder for mold to break down. Drywall and particle board give it a perfect place to grow. Then we sealed our homes shut for energy efficiency and trapped all that moisture inside. Every shower and every breath adds to the air, with nowhere for it to go.
The second is testing. We can now measure mycotoxins in the body, and we know they do not stay in the lungs. They drive inflammation that can reach the brain, the gut, the nervous system, and the hormones. That is why mold can show up looking like so many other things, and why it overlaps so often with conditions.
We are not blaming mold. We are finally looking for it. We are finally recognizing it for what it is, which means we can finally do something about it.
If your labs keep coming back "normal" but you still do not feel well, that is worth paying attention to. Every body and every exposure is different, which is why a personalized approach matters more than any single protocol.

No matter how much sleep I get… I wake up exhausted.

I hear this from people on calls every week, usually right after they tell me every lab their last doctor ran came back “normal.” Exhaustion that sleep never fixes is one of the loudest signs your body is dealing with something it can’t clear on its own.

Sleep is not just rest. It is one of your body’s main detox windows. While you’re in deep sleep, your brain flushes waste through the glymphatic system and your liver and other organs do a lot of their repair and clearing work. So when something is interfering with your sleep, you lose the very process that’s supposed to help your body get the junk out.

Now picture what happens when that something is a toxin. Mold and mycotoxins keep your nervous system on alert and your detox pathways overloaded. You sleep less deeply, you clear less, more builds up, and the cycle tightens. That is how you end up sleeping nine hours and still waking up wrecked.

Mycotoxins like Ochratoxin A and Aflatoxin G2 can do real damage. Ochratoxin A is rough on the kidneys and nervous system and tracks with chronic fatigue, brain fog, headaches, and anxiety. Aflatoxin hits the liver and immune system and can drive inflammation, nausea, and appetite changes.

I’ve been talking a lot about electrolytes and trace minerals lately, and this is exactly why.

A client came to me dealing with frequent urination, dehydration, and worsening mast cell symptoms. Before changing anything major, we looked at one simple factor: her electrolyte supplement.

Many electrolyte products contain additives, fillers, artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, or ingredients that can be problematic for sensitive individuals.

We switched her to a cleaner option with trace minerals and no unnecessary additives, and the improvement was almost immediate.

Does that mean electrolytes are a cure for mast cell activation? No.

But it does highlight something important: sometimes it’s not just what you’re taking—it’s what comes along with it.

When the body is already stressed, inflamed, or reactive, seemingly small ingredients can make a surprisingly big difference.

If you’ve been struggling with symptoms and feel like you’re doing “all the right things” without seeing progress, it may be worth taking a closer look at the ingredients hiding in your supplements, electrolytes, and daily products.

The details matter.

Have questions about electrolytes, trace minerals, or ingredient quality? Drop them below—I’d love to answer them.

Antihistamines + Pepcid for perimenopause?

Here’s the nuance.

An H1 antihistamine like Claritin, Zyrtec, or Allegra plus an H2 blocker like Pepcid may help some women with flushing, itching, hives, reflux, food reactions, or feeling suddenly reactive to everything.

This can be a useful short-term solution, but it’s mostly blocking histamine after it’s already been released.

A more upstream functional medicine approach asks: why is the histamine bucket overflowing?

In perimenopause, shifting estrogen and progesterone can make mast cells more reactive. Mast cells are immune cells that release histamine.

Root-cause support may include gut lining support like aloe + butyrate, mast cell support like quercetin, and DAO before higher-histamine meals.

The goal isn’t just to block histamine.

It’s to keep the histamine bucket from overflowing and create more resilience to prevent future symptoms.

Educational only. Talk with your clinician before starting or stopping medications or supplements.

Comment if perimenopause has made you feel reactive to foods, heat, stress, fragrances, or things you used to tolerate. ⤵️

Hi, I’m Dr. Diana. The face behind The Detox Doc.

Comment START and I’ll send you my mold starter guide to help you figure out where to begin.

I’m a board-certified physician and functional health practitioner specializing in gut health, mold illness, and toxins.
But before any of that, I was a new mom living in a house that was quietly making my entire family sick.

The headaches. The constant illnesses. The fatigue that no amount of sleep could fix. The kids who only calmed down outside or in the car.

I had no idea mold could do that to a body. Most doctors don’t either. That experience changed everything about how I practice medicine.

Now I help people uncover the root causes their labs keep missing. The environmental triggers driving inflammation, chronic fatigue, brain fog, gut issues, anxiety, and autoimmune symptoms that conventional medicine often labels as something else. In short… I help people get to the root cause of their symptoms so they can finally start healing.

If you’ve ever been told your labs are normal while your body is telling you otherwise, you’re not crazy. You’re not alone. And you’re in the right place.
