Seems like a no-brainer right? Most of us know “go outside, get some sun” but how much? Why?
Let’s break it down.

Vitamin D is more than just a happy helper. It’s responsible for dozens of processes within your body to keep it functioning properly. Yes there are different types that do different things.

Here’s a simplified explanation of where to find it…because I’ve heard “why is my level low, I’m outside all day long” more times than I can count.

1. Sunlight (the body’s natural way)
The skin makes vitamin D when exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from sunlight.
* Exposing arms and legs for 5–30 minutes (depending on skin tone, time of day, season, and location) between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., twice a week, is often adequate.
* In summer, just 5–10 minutes outdoors with about 35% of the body exposed (arms and legs) on most days is enough to maintain vitamin D levels.
* A single full-body sun exposure (like wearing a bathing suit) that causes slight pinkness produces the equivalent of about 20,000 IU of vitamin D—far more than any food.

Factors that reduce vitamin D production from sun:
* Darker skin
* Older age
* Sunscreen use
* Living at higher latitudes
* Cloud cover, pollution, and staying indoors
* Obesity (vitamin D gets trapped in fat tissue)

2. Food sources
Diet alone typically provides only 200–400 IU per day—well below the recommended 600–800 IU.
* Oily fish (best natural source)
* Cod liver oil
* Egg yolks
* Sun-dried shiitake mushrooms
* Liver and organ meats
Fortified foods (common in the US):
* Milk, yogurt, orange juice
* Breakfast cereals
* Margarine
Important: Vegetarians and vegans have lower vitamin D levels than meat and fish eaters because most natural sources are animal-based.

3. Supplements
Because most people don’t get enough from sun and food, supplements are often needed.
* Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol): From animal sources; preferred because it raises and maintains blood levels better than D2.
* Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol): From plant/fungal sources; suitable for vegans but less effective.

I commonly hear “I’m not sure | want to pay that much” but think about this - most people calculate the cost of care.
Few calculate the cost of staying unwell.

After my own little tested positive for strep (again) I wondered how things could have gone after she had it as a 9 month old.

Was it the cause of her ADHD and emotional dysregulation?
Would she have been different as a child if she didn’t have it?
Did she end up with PANDAS?

🧠 What is PANDAS?

PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections. It’s a condition where children suddenly develop obsessive-compulsive behaviors or tics after a strep throat infection.

⚡ What makes it different?

The key feature is how SUDDENLY symptoms appear—literally overnight or within days. Parents often describe their child as “a different person” after getting strep throat.

🔍 What to watch for:

• Sudden onset of obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviors

• New tics or unusual movements

• Extreme anxiety or mood changes

• Sleep problems or bedwetting

• Handwriting that suddenly gets worse

• Symptoms that come and go in episodes

These symptoms appear in children before puberty and are linked in time to a strep infection.

💡 What causes it?

The theory is that the body’s immune response to strep bacteria accidentally attacks parts of the brain (the basal ganglia), causing these sudden behavioral changes. However, this is still being researched and remains somewhat controversial in medicine.

🩺 Treatment approach:

• Treating any active strep infection with antibiotics

• Cognitive behavioral therapy for OCD symptoms

• Standard psychiatric medications when needed

• Aim to reduce inflammation

• Focus on healing the gut to protect the gut-brain axis

• In severe cases, doctors may consider immune-based treatments

⚠️ Important to know:

PANDAS is now considered part of a broader condition called PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome), which can be triggered by other infections too, not just strep.

If your child develops sudden, dramatic behavioral changes after an illness, talk to a provider. Early recognition and appropriate treatment can make a significant difference.

Your thyroid gland 🦋, located in your neck, uses iodine to make thyroid hormones. These hormones act like messengers that control many important functions throughout your body, including:
- How fast your body burns calories (metabolism)
- Your energy levels
- Body temperature
- Heart rate
- Growth and development

When your iodine drops? You feel like 💩

I’ve seen a pretty drastic change in how many people are testing low for iodine. The cause of a lot of it might shock you.

…salt. That’s right. Your fancy sea salts are depleting your body of a vital mineral that pink Himalayan salt bae isn’t providing.

So where are some sources you can get it and how much do you need?
- Iodized salt: Table salt with added iodine (check the label—not all salt is iodized)
- Dairy products: Milk, yogurt, and cheese
- Seafood: Fish and shellfish
- Eggs: Especially the yolk
- Bread: Some commercially baked breads contain iodine

- Most adults need about 150 micrograms (μg) per day
- Pregnant women need 220 μg per day
- Breastfeeding women need 290 μg per day
