ASWB STUDIERS… VALIDATION AND AGREEMENT ARE NOT THE SAME THING!
And if you don't understand the difference, you might miss a therapeutic communication question! 👀
LET ME SHOW YOU SOMETHING!
A client tells the social worker:
"My daughter hasn't called me in a week. She obviously doesn't care about me anymore."
Now look at these responses.
RESPONSE 1:
"You're right. If she cared, she would have called you."
WAIT A MINUTE! ✋🏾
The social worker just AGREED with the client's interpretation without having enough information.
RESPONSE 2:
"I'm sure your daughter loves you. She's probably just busy."
Sounds comforting, right?
But the social worker is making an assumption and offering reassurance without exploring the client's experience.
RESPONSE 3:
"It sounds like not hearing from your daughter has been painful for you. Can you tell me more about how you've been feeling?"
NOW WE'RE TALKING! 🔥
The social worker acknowledged the client's emotional experience without confirming or denying the client's interpretation.
THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE!
VALIDATION: Acknowledging and communicating an understanding of someone's feelings or experience.
AGREEMENT: Endorsing someone's statement, conclusion, or interpretation.
And here's the ASWB lesson…
YOU CAN VALIDATE SOMEONE'S EMOTIONS WITHOUT AGREEING WITH THEIR CONCLUSIONS!
When answering therapeutic communication questions, look for responses that demonstrate empathy, avoid unnecessary assumptions, and encourage appropriate exploration.
But remember: the most appropriate response still depends on the complete clinical situation, including any immediate safety concerns.
