Manage Stress Before It Manages You

Stress is a part of life, but it doesn't have to control your life. Learning to manage stress well can improve your physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, and quality of life.

Tips
• Notice the early signs of stress before they become overwhelming.
• Practice deep breathing or relaxation exercises.
• Exercise regularly.
• Spend time in prayer and quiet reflection.
• Break large problems into smaller, manageable steps.
• Don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Did You Know?
Research has consistently found that chronic stress can affect nearly every system in the body, including the heart, immune system, digestion, sleep, and memory. The good news is that healthy stress-management techniques can reduce these effects and improve both physical and emotional well-being.

I believe we sometimes underestimate the toll of ongoing stress. It can disrupt sleep, affect digestion, and make it harder to feel and function well. That’s why noticing it early and practicing small ways to recover matter.

Encouragement
You may not be able to eliminate every source of stress, but you can choose healthier ways to respond to it.

Remember: Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

Choose a More Positive Mindset

We can't always choose our circumstances, but we can choose how we respond to them. A positive mindset doesn't ignore life's difficulties—it helps us face them with hope, resilience, and confidence.

I was working with a gentleman a while back whose main issue was to become more positive. He believes his negativity has colored most of his life – and he’s right! The good news is, that with practice and the right tools, we can all become more positive!

Tips
• Notice what you're thinking.
• Replace negative self-talk with encouraging truth.
• Practice gratitude every day.
• Focus on what you can control.
• Look for solutions instead of dwelling on problems.
• Spend time with positive, encouraging people.

Did You Know?
Research links optimism with well-being and some measures of physical health, and studies suggest that specific exercises can help people build optimism.
Fortunately, optimism isn't something we're simply born with—it can be learned and strengthened over time.

Encouragement
Being positive doesn't mean pretending life is easy. It means believing that, with God's help, you can face today's challenges and take the next step forward.

If you’d like extra support creating healthier habits, I work with clients online as well as in person. Information is on my website.

Nurture Meaningful Relationships

One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is meaningful relationships. We were created for connection, and healthy relationships can enrich our lives, strengthen us during difficult times, and bring us tremendous joy.

Tips
• Make time for the people who matter most.
• Listen more than you speak.
• Express appreciation often.
• Forgive when possible.
• Set healthy boundaries with difficult people.
• Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Did You Know?
Research consistently shows that people with strong social connections tend to be happier, healthier, more resilient, and even live longer. Healthy relationships can reduce stress, improve emotional well-being, and provide support during life's challenges.

I’ve been going through a personal challenge lately that has been tricky to navigate. A dear friend has met me for lunch twice – both times pretty much last minute. She has been a great sounding board and has provided understanding, good counsel and support. I treasure my relationships!

Encouragement
Invest in the people who invest in you. A simple phone call, text, or shared meal can strengthen a relationship more than you realize.

Remember: Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

Protect Your Sleep

Sleep isn't a luxury—it's one of the most important things you can do for your physical, emotional, and mental health.

Tips
• Keep a regular bedtime.
• Create a relaxing bedtime routine.
• Limit scrolling and bright screens before bed.
• Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
• Avoid caffeine late in the day.
• If your mind races, practice relaxation or prayer before bedtime. I do a Tapping/Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) session every night before bedtime. I do it on an app in my phone as I’m lying in bed – most nights I doze off as I’m tapping. I love the way it helps calm my mind.

Did You Know?
Research has shown that good sleep supports:
• Better memory
• Stronger immune function
• Improved mood
• Better concentration
• Healthier weight
• Better heart health

People who consistently get enough quality sleep generally function better in almost every area of life.

Encouragement
Instead of asking, "How little sleep can I get by on?" ask, "How much better might I feel if I consistently got enough?"

Curious about natural approaches like hypnosis, EFT, or mindset tools for creating healthier change? I’d love to help. Details are on my website.

Move More: Exercise for Energy and Health

Our bodies were designed to move. Regular physical activity doesn't just strengthen muscles—it benefits nearly every system in the body, including the brain.

Tips
• Find an activity you actually enjoy. I was running on my rebounder recently – and it was more of an effort than usual. I started my mind change trick. I told myself how much I enjoy rebounding and how good it is for me. That it helps me be strong and healthy and I love doing it. And it worked! I started feeling much better about the activity and ended up enjoying it again.
• Take short walks throughout the day.
• Park farther away.
• Stretch when you've been sitting awhile.
• Strength training is important as we get older.
• Remember that every minute of movement counts.

Did You Know?
Research has found that regular exercise can:
• Improve mood
• Reduce stress and anxiety
• Improve sleep
• Increase energy
• Help protect memory and brain health
• Reduce the risk of many chronic diseases

Even short periods of movement have benefits. A helpful longer-term goal for adults is about 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, along with strength training twice a week.

Encouragement
Don't wait until you feel motivated. Start moving—and motivation often follows.

Remember: Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

Honor Your Body with Healthy Choices

The way we treat our bodies matters. The foods we eat, how much water we drink, whether we smoke, how much alcohol we consume, and the everyday choices we make all affect our physical and emotional well-being. Taking good care of your body isn't about perfection—it's about honoring the gift of health God has given you.

Healthy Habits to Consider
• Choose more whole foods and fewer highly processed foods.
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day. I always carry a large insulated mug filled with ice water with me. I sip water throughout the day. Doing it that way is much easier than trying to gulp down a large serving of water at once.
• Don't smoke or v**e.
• Limit alcohol.
• Eat reasonable portions rather than striving for perfection.
• Remember that small healthy choices add up over time.

Did You Know?
Healthy eating, avoiding to***co, and drinking less alcohol can help lower the risk of several chronic diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers. Small, sustainable changes are a good place to begin.

Encouragement
Don't try to change everything this week. Pick one healthy habit and practice it until it becomes second nature.

If you’d like extra support creating healthier habits, I work with clients online as well as in person. Information is on my website.

Welcome to our October series: Self-Care Isn’t Selfish.

Many of us are very good at taking care of everyone else, but not nearly as good at taking care of ourselves. We may even feel guilty when we slow down, set boundaries, rest, or make our own health a priority.

What we need to remember is that self-care isn't selfish. It's how we honor the mind, body, and spirit God has entrusted to us.

Sometimes I struggle with taking time to eat right, exercise, get enough sleep. Because, honestly, there are other things I could be doing that, at times, feel more urgent or important. During those moments I remind myself that if I’m not functioning well, I’m not going to be much use to anyone else. Giving myself permission to take good care of myself is an ongoing process for me. It may need to be that for you too.

When we take care of our minds, bodies, and spirits, we have more energy, patience, peace, and joy to share with the people we love.

Throughout October we'll explore simple ways to care for the person God created you to be—from healthy habits and stress management to relationships, fun, faith, and personal growth.

You matter too. And maybe today is the perfect day to give yourself permission to take good care of you.

Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

September is Su***de Prevention Month, and before the month ends, I wanted to share a free resource I created that may help someone in our community. When You’re Worried About Someone: A Practical Guide to Su***de Prevention walks you through what to say, what questions to ask, warning signs to take seriously, and how to help someone connect with appropriate support.

Most of us hope we’ll never need this information—but if someone we care about is struggling, knowing what to do can make an enormous difference. I hope you’ll download a copy, save it, and share it with anyone who might find it helpful. It’s completely free: https://drmelissarich.com/resources

Build Energy Through Small, Supportive Choices

Sometimes we wish a big burst of energy to arrive and help get us back on track. But we don’t have to wait for that before taking action. Energy does not always arrive before we begin; sometimes a small action helps create the energy and momentum needed for the next one.

The goal is not to force yourself through exhaustion. It is to choose a gentle, supportive step that meets your needs without requiring more energy than you currently have.

Choose simple actions that support energy:
o Drink a glass of water.
o Eat something nourishing.
o Step outside for fresh air and sunlight. (One of my personal favorites).
o Stretch or take a brief walk.
o Complete one manageable task.
o Take a genuine break without guilt.
o Create a calming transition into sleep.
o Spend time with children or pets. (I take regular puppy petting breaks.)
o Listen to uplifting music.
o Pray or become quiet in God’s presence.

Alternate periods of effort with intentional recovery. Instead of pushing until you are completely depleted, pause at reasonable intervals to breathe, stretch, drink water, or rest your mind. And when you do that, notice which activities restore your energy and which ones quietly drain it.

Pay attention to how you feel after different activities and interactions. Feeling calmer, clearer, lighter, or more hopeful may be a sign that something is genuinely restorative.

Small, consistent choices can gradually rebuild strength and vitality. One nourishing meal, one short walk, one healthy boundary, or one restful evening may seem insignificant—but repeated choices create meaningful change.

You do not have to restore all your energy at once. Simply choose the next supportive step and trust that God can use small acts of wisdom and self-care to help renew your strength.

Moving from stress to God’s peace—one practical step at a time.

Rest Is Part of Restoration

We all need regular rest in our lives – and it’s not limited to sleep. Different kinds of depletion require different kinds of restoration:

• Physical rest: sleeping, lying down, stretching, or allowing the body to recover.
• Mental quiet: stepping away from decisions, problem-solving, and constant thinking. This is a big one for me. When I get overwhelmed, I need some quiet to reset and help me move forward again.
• Emotional support: talking honestly with someone who listens, understands, and cares.
• Reduced sensory input: lowering the noise, dimming the lights, silencing notifications, or spending time away from screens.
• Enjoyment and play: doing something simply because it is fun—not because it is useful or productive.
• Spiritual renewal: praying, reading Scripture, worshiping, or becoming quiet in God’s presence.
• Connection with other people: spending time with people who help you feel safe, accepted, encouraged, and renewed.

More stimulation does not always create more energy. Another cup of coffee, more sugar, constant scrolling, or keeping the television on may temporarily distract us from exhaustion without providing the kind of restoration we actually need.

Pushing through may help us accomplish more for a short time, but repeatedly ignoring the need for rest can deepen exhaustion and make even ordinary responsibilities feel harder.

Rest can be responsible, productive, and necessary. It is not time wasted; it is part of caring for the mind and body that allow us to do everything else.

Human beings were created with a need for rhythms of work and restoration. Even God’s design includes times for activity and times for rest.

Moving from stress to God’s peace—one practical step at a time.
