Connect – Get together – in person – with friends or family. In our tech heavy age, staying connected is easier than ever. But sometimes getting touch by text, phone call, email or even video chats leave out important elements.

Being with people, in person, allows us to chat, laugh, catch up and really connect. I especially believe this happens over food.

Last night my 2 brothers and 1 of my sister-in-laws (the other was out of town) got together at my brother’s home. We made pizza that he baked in his outdoor pizza oven – it was yummy – and ate banana pudding that my other brother and his wife brought – amazing!

The conversations and fun moments we had wouldn’t have happened on a phone call. So set up regular get-togethers with the people you care for – it matters.

Benefits –
• Reduces loneliness
• Improves emotional health
• Strengthens relationships
• Lowers stress
• Increases happiness

If you’d like extra support creating healthier habits, I work with clients online as well as in person. Information is on my website.

Sing – By yourself, with a group. Lots of people will dismiss this one because they think they don’t have a good singing voice. But the nice thing is that it really doesn’t matter if you sound like JLo or a croaking frog.

Singing out loud – by yourself or with a small or large group is wonderful for emotional wellbeing. I don’t have a good solo voice but I do have a decent choir voice. I sing in choir at my church and thoroughly enjoy it. Making music (even if it’s less than tuneful at times) makes me feel good.

And yes, the Bible mentions singing. Psalm 100 tells us to make a joyful noise to the Lord. Notice it doesn’t say a melodious or musical noise but a joyful one. We can all do that!

Benefits –
• Lifts mood
• Reduces stress
• Improves breathing
• Builds connection with others
• Encourages emotional expression

Play – Do something fun. How long has it been since you did something just because you enjoyed it? Not because it was educational, good for you or necessary – but because it gave you pleasure. Children do this instinctively but as adults often neglect it. Fun is not only, well – fun, but it’s actually good for us.

Benefits –
• Reduces stress
• Boosts mood
• Sparks creativity
• Increases energy
• Gives your brain a healthy reset

One of the most remarkable things about gratitude is how it spreads.

When we begin practicing gratitude regularly, it often influences not only our own lives but also the people around us.

Gratitude tends to create a ripple effect that touches many areas of life.

For example:

• Improved pain tolerance and reduced perception of chronic pain. Lower stress and positive emotional states can influence how the body processes discomfort.
• Strengthened neural pathways associated with positive thinking. The brain gradually becomes more accustomed to noticing what is good.
• Stronger feelings of compassion and kindness toward others. Gratitude naturally encourages generosity and empathy.
• A deeper sense of contentment and trust in God’s timing. Gratitude reminds us that life often unfolds in meaningful ways we cannot always see immediately.

The beautiful thing about gratitude is that it often grows when we share it.
You might try:

• Express appreciation to someone who has made a difference in your life.
• Look for opportunities to encourage or support someone else. I make my own greeting cards (I’m a big crafter) and try to send out several each week to encourage people. This helps them but it also blesses me!
• Take a moment each evening to reflect on the blessings of the day.

Gratitude has a quiet way of expanding — within our own hearts and within the lives of others.

Reflection:

Who can you be a blessing or encouragement to today?

Like many positive practices, gratitude becomes most powerful when it becomes a regular habit rather than an occasional thought.

The good news is that gratitude does not require a lot of time or effort.

Small, consistent actions can gradually reshape how we think and experience life.

Practicing gratitude regularly can influence many areas of wellbeing:
• Improved digestive health and gut function. Lower stress levels help support healthy digestion.
• Improved decision-making under stress. Gratitude helps calm the mind and create clearer thinking.
• Greater feelings of hope and optimism. Focusing on what is good encourages a more positive outlook.
• Increased worship and praise as a lifestyle. Gratitude naturally leads many people toward deeper spiritual reflection.

Simple daily habits can help build this practice:

• Start the morning by thinking of one blessing before getting out of bed. I start my day off with prayer while still in bed. It took me a while to develop this habit but now I do it automatically – it starts out my day on a happy, positive note.
• Write a short weekly gratitude reflection.
• Pause during the day to appreciate something ordinary or meaningful.

Over time, these small habits can quietly transform the way we see our lives.

Many people think motivation comes from pressure, discipline, or pushing harder.

But research suggests that positive emotional states can actually improve motivation and productivity.

Gratitude helps shift our mindset from focusing on what is missing to recognizing what is already working well. That shift can increase both energy and engagement in daily life. I have definitely found this to be true. When I get discouraged, I think about what is already going well. Sometimes I have to really search for it, but good things are always there. This helps me continue moving forward.

For example:

• Increased motivation and productivity. When we appreciate progress and small wins, we’re more likely to keep moving forward.
• Greater creativity and mental openness. Gratitude encourages flexible thinking and new ideas.
• Improved self-esteem and self-worth. Recognizing the good in our lives often helps us see ourselves more positively as well.
• Stronger sense of purpose and calling. Gratitude can remind us that our lives have meaning and direction.

You can begin strengthening this mindset with simple daily practices:

• Notice and appreciate small accomplishments during the day.
• Take a moment to thank God for opportunities and abilities you’ve been given.
• Write down one thing you did well each evening.

Over time, gratitude becomes a powerful source of encouragement and forward momentum.

Reflection:

What is one thing that went well for you today?

Many people live with the quiet pressure that life should always go according to plan.

When things don’t unfold the way we expect, frustration and disappointment can quickly appear.

Gratitude offers a helpful shift in perspective.

Instead of focusing only on what is missing or imperfect, gratitude helps us appreciate what is still good and meaningful.

This shift can influence several important areas of wellbeing:

• Healthier lifestyle choices. People who practice gratitude often become more motivated to care for their bodies.
• Improved ability to reframe difficult experiences. Gratitude encourages flexible thinking and perspective. I’ve always said that one of my super-powers is to pivot quickly and, if Plan A isn’t working, to shift to (or quickly develop) Plan B.
• Greater emotional resilience during difficult seasons. Gratitude strengthens our ability to adapt and recover.
• Greater alignment between values and daily behavior. Gratitude often encourages us to live more intentionally.

You can begin practicing this perspective in simple ways:

• Adjust expectations and allow space for flexibility in your plans.
• Hold plans lightly and remain open to unexpected outcomes.
• Let go of perfectionism and look for small positives instead.

Life rarely unfolds perfectly.

But gratitude can help us recognize that even imperfect days often contain meaningful blessings.

Our minds sometimes develop habits of focusing on problems, worries, or what is missing.

Over time, this can create negative thinking loops that are difficult to interrupt.

Gratitude offers a powerful way to gently redirect those patterns.

When practiced regularly, gratitude can help shift our mental and emotional focus.

For example:

• Improved nervous system regulation. Gratitude activates the body’s relaxation response.
• Reduced rumination and overthinking. Gratitude interrupts repetitive negative thoughts. Sometimes I have to pull my thoughts back from negativity repeatedly – on an ongoing basis. Negative messages can be like a powerful magnet that keeps attracting me! When that happens, I take some deep breaths and ask God for His help in redirecting my thoughts toward more positive areas.
• Increased optimism and positive thinking patterns. Gratitude helps the brain notice opportunities and possibilities.
• Increased faith during challenging circumstances. Gratitude can strengthen trust in God even when life feels uncertain.

Developing this habit does not require large changes. Small practices can make a meaningful difference.

You might try:

• Write down three things you’re grateful for each evening.
• Reframe difficult situations by asking, “What can I learn or appreciate here?”
• Practice short gratitude pauses during the day.

Over time, gratitude can help transform the messages our minds repeat most often.

Reflection:

Take a moment — what is one blessing you noticed today?
