Listen up P**p Butts! Some people study tattoo history. Shane Enholm lived it.

Shane will be in Hawaii in the Beginning of December to do a Tattoo Machine Discourse and to check out some huge waves at Pipeline and Waimea.
Tattooer, punk rocker, survivor, storyteller—and yeah, even a former bank robber—Shane comes out of an era when tattooing and the LA punk scene were both a whole lot rougher around the edges.

His road through tattooing crosses paths with some of the names that helped define the culture: Bob Roberts, Mike “Rollo Banks” Malone, Shanghai Kate Hellenbrand, Lyle Tuttle, Paul Rogers and generations of tattooers who built this thing long before tattooing became mainstream.

THE ROLLO MATIC — BUILT IN CHINATOWN, HONOLULU 🤙⚡

Mike “Rollo” Malone built these legendary Rollo Matic tattoo machines inside a tiny 250-square-foot tattoo shop in Honolulu’s Chinatown.

If you ever met Rollo in person, you know that alone was an accomplishment. The man somehow fit himself, his tools, his artwork and his imagination into that little shop—and produced some of the most incredible tattoo machines, hand-drawn flash and tattoos I’ve ever seen.

The Rollo Matic was a FAST, short-stroke outliner—the kind of purpose-built machine that came from a tattooer who understood exactly what he wanted a machine to do. These weren’t mass-produced collectibles. They were working tools built by a tattooer, for tattooing.

Decades later, I still occasionally come across people walking around Hawaii wearing original tattoos done by Rollo. A few of them have been generous enough to let me photograph and film those surviving pieces. I’ll be sharing that history later.

Machines disappear. Flash gets scattered. Shops close. Tattooers pass on.

But the tattoos keep walking around.

That’s exactly why I’m documenting this.
