Friends and patients, I rarely ask for help, but today I am asking for someone I love.
My husband, Darin-many of you know him as Coach Darin, has been diagnosed with Diffuse Systemic Sclerosis (Scleroderma), a devastating autoimmune disease that has already taken much of the use of his hands and significantly affected his mobility. This disease doesn't stop there—it can continue to progress and eventually affect vital organs, making it a life-threatening condition.
Many of you know Darin. He is a veteran, former Army paratrooper, local business owner, devoted husband to me of 34 years, father, and grandfather. He has spent his life helping others whenever he could.
Now he needs help.
MD Anderson has accepted Darin into a clinical trial that offers hope for slowing the progression of this disease and preserving his quality of life. Unfortunately, many of the associated medical expenses, hospital costs, and travel expenses are not covered by our insurance or VA benefits. Now MD Anderson has said that they may not take our insurance.
We've created this short video to share Darin's story and explain what we're facing.
