June is National Safety Month — and for older adults, staying safe at home often starts with staying mobile, supported, and connected.

Falls, limited mobility, and difficulty navigating everyday routines can quietly impact a senior’s confidence and independence over time. With the right support, many older adults can continue aging safely in the home they love while maintaining routines that keep them active and engaged.

At Hillendale Home Care, we believe safety and independence go hand in hand.

Yesterday was Father's Day. June is Men's Health Month. We want to mark both by sharing a story.

Billy Jack is 98 years old and lives in Alamo. He was hospitalized with pneumonia in April, and his team wasn't sure he would recover. Faced with the option of invasive interventions, he said no. He had always been clear that he wanted to stay home. So his care team built around that wish, and they brought him home.

Last week, he was playing the piano.

Our own Francesca Vogel has been in Billy Jack's corner for years, advocating alongside his family and coordinating his care team. His primary Hillendale caregiver Enrica has built a bond with him that his family says is a real part of why he's still here. Together with his doctors and loved ones, they call themselves "Team Billy Jack."

His story is a good illustration of the independence and positive outcomes that can come from home care working so closely with the whole care team. A man in his own home, on his own terms, with a team that knows him and a care plan built around what he actually wants.

We also wrote about something harder this month: the reality that aging men are less likely than women to ask for help, to seek medical care proactively, or to admit when things have changed. The statistics on isolation, depression, and preventable decline in older men are striking. The "I'm fine" runs deep.

If you're navigating this with someone you care about, we put together a practical guide for Father's Day. Worth a read, and worth sharing.

Today we're thinking about every father, grandfather, and great-grandfather we've had the honor of caring for.

The men who built businesses, raised families, served their country, and showed up — every day — for the people they loved. The men who taught us to be tough, to be soft, to be patient, to fix what we can and accept what we can't.

And the families now caring for them in return.

Whether you're celebrating in person, calling long-distance, or quietly remembering one no longer here — we see you. The love that brought us here doesn't fade. It just changes shape.

Happy Father's Day from the Hillendale family.

Nothing says summer like red, white, and blue! 🇺🇸

Our team had the sweetest time visiting the residents at Merrill Gardens in Lafayette this week, making 4th of July arrangements together — including with one very special granddaughter who stole the show.

Moments like this are exactly why we do what we do. Happy early Fourth from the Hillendale family!

By the time an older adult feels thirsty, they're already dehydrated.

Bay Area summers hit aging bodies harder than most realize. Older adults lose their sense of thirst over time, take medications that affect hydration, and have a harder time regulating temperature. Heat exhaustion in seniors can look like confusion, not sweating.

A few small habits that make a big difference:
🌿 Offer water with every meal and snack
🌿 Keep a glass within reach all day
🌿 Build in hydrating foods (watermelon, cucumber, soup, yogurt)
🌿 Watch for early signs: confusion, fatigue, dry mouth, dark urine
🌿 Move outdoor activities to early morning or evening

A small change in routine can prevent an ER visit.

If you're caring for an aging parent this summer and want a steady hand, we're here.

“Working with Hillendale has been a life saver. Both of my parents have dementia and health issues and we need a lot of care. They have been amazing at getting us wonderful care givers. A special shout-out to Mariana. She and my Mom developed the sweetest relationship. Mariana was warm, patient, caring and Mom grew to really love her. We cannot thank her enough for all she has done for our sweet little Mom.”
— Andrea B., Daughter of Client

We are incredibly grateful to Andrea for sharing her family’s experience and for allowing us to be part of their care journey. Stories like this are a reminder that compassionate home care is not just about assistance, it’s about trust, connection, and meaningful relationships built over time.

To Mariana and all of our caregivers, thank you for the warmth, patience, and humanity you bring into the homes of the families we serve every day.

June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, and we want to spend it showing up for the families in the thick of it.

If someone you love was recently diagnosed with dementia, the first 90 days can feel like standing in the middle of a busy intersection with no idea which way to go. You're not doing it wrong. It just is that hard.

We put together a practical, compassionate guide for Bay Area families navigating exactly this moment — from the first medical follow-ups to the harder conversations to knowing when to bring in outside support.

To wrap up our National Mobility Awareness Month + Older Americans Month series, we're spotlighting the OT whose work inspired our final post.

Emily Steedman, OTR/L + RAC-CT, asks every client one question that isn't on any standard intake form: "What's one thing you wish you could do again?"

The answer from one of her clients, a woman who had been told she'd never walk again, stopped us in our tracks. It's a story about what happens when care is built around a real person, not a diagnosis. And it's a reminder that a great OT, paired with the right home care support, can unlock outcomes families didn't think were possible anymore.

We're so glad Emily shared it with us. It's the perfect note to end this series on, and we hope it inspires families who are navigating this season, gives a little glimpse into the kind of personalized, collaborative care we try to bring to families all across the Bay Area, and maybe sparks a conversation worth having.
