2 weeks ago, on the 12th of March, I lost my incredible Grandpa.Β
Dr. David Wallace Macky was born in New Zealand in 1935, he spent most of his adolescence in Bermuda, but if you asked him, he felt βmostly Britishβ.Β
He came to the States to attend Yale shortly before joining the Navy. After his service he returned to Allegheny University where he played soccer & tennis. Gβpa then earned a PhD in Statistics before returning down under to teach at Queensland University.
Geeps eventually made his way to San Diego & spent the rest of his teaching years at SDSU, where he established the universityβs first ever womenβs soccer program. He coached there as well as several other local high schools. This man LOVED soccer.
Outside of sports, G'pa lived for traveling, hiking, biking & music. He backpacked across England, became friends with Darius Rucker & attended many World Cups.Β
A true academic, this guy lived to read. He also loved learning, especially from those who had different experiences or viewpoints than him. He prided himself on being informed. This is the main reason he was so special to me.
Above all, he LOVED being a grandpa and would attend as many swim/track meets and baseball games he could. If you swam with me, chances are he knew all your times too.
Itβs hard to imagine a world without him in it, mostly because I donβt want to. I guess thatβs why he was always singing & reminding me: βYou canβt always get what you wantβ. Thereβs always a lesson with that guy.
Rest in Power papa π€
