Step-Back and Sn**ch

As we mentioned before space is the name of the game in basketball and you can't expect anyone to give it to you.

The Step-back and sn**ch is a great technique to create space from the defender

In order make this work you must commit and it is all about the set-up.

Basic Steps to perform Step-Back and Sn**ch

➡️Drive hard🚗

➡️Get Defender Moving⛸️

➡️Hard Stop🛑

➡️Push yourself back🧎🏾‍♂️

➡️Sn**ch ball back using momentum to get more space🏋🏾‍♂️

➡️Land in athletic position/ready to rise on shot⛹️

A slow deceleration/taking your time to slow down will let the defender know that our about to change direction so the stop must be sudden and push back must be immediate and flowing.

Many young athletes struggle with this change of direction activity and in our next post we will address some off court training to improve this ability.

Insider Tip: If going to dominate hand side you will need to hop with both feet leaving the ground

The human body is complex and it has a ridiculous amount of safeguards.

It will almost always find a way to acheive a taste. This can also be thought of as it has the potential to respond to many different inputs in a similar manner.

Understanding that looking at things in isolation is very important to the process.

Complication is a byproduct of lack of understanding.

We should continue to strive to make things simpler for those we work with.

We also need to understand how the part fits in and works with the whole.

What does all this mean?????

To put simply leg extensions are a good exercise....until it isn't.

🦴Bones Change Shape🦴

Bones bend and this will affect the functional capabilities of the system.

Bones are Viscoelastic and thus will act in that manner.  The compressive forces of muscle influence the bones in regards to their shape.  This shape change then influences the muscles and round and round we go. 😵😵

In the text its states that the change occurs with age. Age is relative and time is a better word to use.With time comes shape change.

When addressing rehab and training we have to understand that bone is stiff and will take time to change, this change will occur and must be considered in patient expectations and with exercise programming.

Accomplishments and Campfires

If you are struggling to meet a goal or start a beneficial habit.  Start thinking campfires.

When creating an awesome  campfire it is a good idea to use three types of fuel. Tinder, Kindling, and Fuel Wood.

Tinder: it catches fire quick and easy, it burns big but it burns fast and not exceptionally hot (orange flames). 

Kindling: is the middle man, requires more energy or heat to get started than tinder. the Tinder is used to light the kindling. Once lit the kindling burns longer and hotter than the tinder but it is not enough to sustain fire for the night. It is a nessecary step in order to it ignite the fuel wood.

Fuel Wood: is what is needed for a sustained campfire.  Placing fuel wood on tinder will smother out the fire before it gets started which is why kindling is needed.  Fuel wood takes a lot more heat or energy to get started but once it is is lit it not only burns longer but also hotter (blue flames).  When fuel wood finally gets lit the energy and heat it produces will ignite other larger pieces of wood, without additional tinder or kindling, it will even dry out damp wood and set that a blaze.

When embarking on a new venture or habit use Tinder to get started, think easy wins and things that make you feel good. To keep moving in that direction you need to have the kindling set up. Kindling should build on your tinder and lead you to more sustainability. The kindling ohase may last longer than the tinder phase but the goal is to get the fuel wood lit. The fuel wood is the actually habit or behavior that is sustainable and creates the success of a long term goal.

I don't really like either choice.

but if an athlete is eating plenty of whole foods and getting the general nutritional needs a maybe the either or choice I make here.

If an athletes needs calories the bar can provide the caloric density needed compared to the Cliff bar.

Very little is black and white in the realm of Athletics.

Meet your needs and keep the goal the goal.

Eccentric Orientation vs Yielding Strategy

🌊To Position is To Expand🌊

Look at the hips on the 3 pictures. The depth is very very similar. ATG.
Now compare the knee position in relation to the body.

Picture 1 (135 #): More Vertical Shin, natural spinal curve, knees close to body, Butt-to-sock

Picture 2 (225 #): More Dorsiflexion, Straighter spine, Knees close to body, Butt-to-sock

Picture 3 (225 #): More Dorsiflexion, Reverse Curve in Spine, Body further from knees, Butt-to-sock

Billhartmanpt compression and expansion movement model states that there are two ways to move compress and expand.
This expansion can occur through either Eccentric Orientation or a Yielding Strategy.

To simplify the difference between eccentric orientation and yielding we can use the pictures above.

Picture 1 demonstrates a more eccentric orientation. The knees moving back towards the body and the natural spinal curve demonstrate a relative movement between the joints. Eccentric orientation demonstrates a relative pressure change in the joint, so in this instance the muscles that increase pressure on the posterior hip capsule "relaxed" enough to allow the capsule to expand in that area allowing the femur to move closer to the body. Moving into this position puts the posterior hip muscles in a position that is a disadvantage to force production.

Picture 2 demonstrates a more yielding strategy. The knees do not move back towards the body yet the same depth is acquired. In the yielding strategy the pressure in the posterior hip capsule is not decreased to allow the femur to move back towards the body. The posterior hip maintains a concentric orientation. The position is obtained by a decrease in motor unit recruitment to the point that can no longer hold the weight and thus a stretch occurs through the connective tissues allowing the expansion necessary to achieve the position.

Picture 3 would demonstrate yielding with fatigue.
