Small Shifts for Longevity: Day 83/200 🫐🥣💧

Today’s small shift happened before I even left for the day. I took a few extra minutes to grab breakfast and water so I wouldn’t be tempted by whatever was quick and easy once hunger hit.

Breakfast was simple: Greek yogurt topped with blueberries, a little honey, and granola. I paired it with water and lemon and headed out the door ready for the day.

I’ve learned that healthy choices are much easier when I make them before I’m tired, rushed, or starving. A little preparation goes a long way. 🤍

Today we celebrate Juneteenth.

On June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation—enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free.

Juneteenth is a celebration of Black freedom, Black resilience, Black culture, and Black joy.

As we honor this day, we recognize the generations who endured, resisted, built communities, preserved traditions, and created lasting change despite extraordinary barriers.

At Hootenanny Joy, we believe that healthy communities are built when dignity, opportunity, and belonging are available to all.

Today, we celebrate freedom. We honor history. We uplift Black voices. We support Black businesses. And we make space for Black joy.

Happy Juneteenth.

One of the best wellness habits I've built has nothing to do with a workout plan or meal plan.

It's being prepared.

Over the years, I've learned that I'm much more likely to get outside, move my body, explore, or try something new when I already have what I need with me.

So my car tends to include things like:
- Hiking boots
- A lightweight rain jacket
- Binoculars
-A backpack with daily essentials
- My geocaching gear
- A change of clothes

None of it is fancy.
But it removes barriers.

If I drive past a trail and have an hour to spare, I'm ready.
If the weather changes, I'm prepared.
If I spot birds or wildlife, I can actually stop and enjoy them.

Sometimes wellness isn't about having more motivation.
Sometimes it's about making the healthy choice the easy choice.

A little preparation can open the door to a lot more movement, adventure, and joy.

What is one thing you keep in your car "just in case"?

Small Shifts for Longevity: Days 73–81/200

Life got busy and I fell behind on posting. We recently took a family road trip to spend quality time together, explore new places, and make memories. While it was a refreshing break, it also meant stepping away from my usual routines for a bit.

When life gets full—whether from travel, family activities, or everyday responsibilities—I return to the basics:
😴 Prioritize sleep🥗 Eat nourishing food☀️ Get some sunshine🚶‍♀️ Keep moving💸 Check in with my finances

These simple habits help me reset and regain momentum. Longevity isn’t about perfection—it’s about returning to the fundamentals, especially during busy seasons or after time away from home.

One small shift at a time. 🤍

Today I spotted something I've never seen in the wild before:
A bluebird. 🐦💙

It may seem like a small thing, but moments like this are one of the reasons I love getting outside.

The more time you spend in nature, the more you start noticing.

Different birds.
Different sounds.
Different seasons.

Different little moments you might have missed if you were rushing through your day.

And now that I've identified my first bluebird, I'll probably spot them more often.
Funny how that works.

Once we learn to notice something, we start seeing it everywhere.
I think wellness works the same way.

The more attention we pay to the things that bring us joy, peace, movement, connection, and wonder, the more we start finding them in everyday life.

Also, fair warning: a bird nerd t-shirt may be making an appearance in a future video. 😄

What is something new you've noticed lately? 🤍🌿🐦

As I was walking through a wetlands area, I saw a sign that said:
"Wetlands are nature's kidneys."

And honestly, it made me stop and think.

Because if I'm being honest, staying hydrated is something I have to work on too.
It's easy to get busy and realize halfway through the day that I've barely had any water.

But hydration affects so many parts of how we feel.
💧 Energy
💧 Focus
💧 Digestion
💧 Physical performance
💧 Overall well-being

Sometimes we go looking for complicated solutions when one of the first questions we should ask ourselves is:
"Have I had enough water today?"

That's one reason hydration is July's focus inside the Hootenanny Joy Hub.

Not because it's flashy.
Because it's foundational.

Small habits often make the biggest difference over time.

So consider this your gentle reminder from both me and the wetlands:
Go drink a glass of water 💧🤍

(part 2) I've decided to wear a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) again for the next couple of weeks.

And no, I'm not diabetic.

I'm interested in understanding how my body responds to food, sleep, stress, exercise, hydration, and daily life.

One thing I've learned through my own wellness journey is that many health issues don't appear overnight.

They develop little by little over time.

That's why I'm interested in prevention, awareness, and understanding my body's signals before they become bigger problems.

I'm especially curious because we're heading on vacation soon, and it'll be interesting to see how travel, different foods, and a different routine affect things.
I'll share what I learn along the way.

Not as medical advice - just as a curious wellness enthusiast who enjoys experimenting and learning about how the body works.

Have you ever worn a glucose monitor or tracked your blood sugar?

And if you enjoy conversations about wellness, prevention, healthy habits, and real-life health experiments, come join us for FREE inside the Hootenanny Joy Hub on Skool. We'd love to have you.

Sometimes the simplest wellness practices are the ones we overlook.

A pause.
A deep breath.
A moment to notice something beautiful.

When I'm outside, I like to look up at the clouds, take a slow breath in, pause for a moment, and then exhale slowly.

Nothing complicated.

Just a brief opportunity to step out of "doing" mode and reconnect with the present moment.

You can do the same thing with:
☁️ Clouds
🌳 Trees
🌸 Flowers
💧 Water
🦋 Wildlife

The goal isn't perfection.

It's simply creating a small moment of awareness in the middle of a busy day.
A chance to slow down, breathe, and notice what's already around you.

These little moments can help us feel more grounded, more present, and a little less caught up in the rush of everyday life.

That's the kind of simple, practical wellness we talk about inside the Hootenanny Joy Skool community 🤍 Join me for FREE here -->
