Transformation happens when we stay connected long enough to become who we're meant to

I recently realized something that hit me hard.

I don’t think most relationships struggle because there’s not enough love.

I think they struggle because there’s too much fear.

Fear of abandonment.
Fear of rejection.
Fear of being vulnerable.
Fear of being fully seen.
Fear of being hurt again.

Looking back, many of the moments I’m least proud of weren’t caused by a lack of love.

They happened when fear was running the show.

Fear made me defensive.
Fear made me try to control outcomes.
Fear made me abandon my authenticity and become someone I thought I needed to be so the other person wouldn’t leave.

And that’s what I’m sitting with lately.

Maybe relationships don’t need more love.
Maybe they need less fear.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

What role do you think fear plays in relationships?

This realization hit me hard.

For a long time, I thought being needed meant I was loved.

The more I helped...
The more I gave...
The more I carried...

The more valuable I felt.

But eventually I started asking myself a difficult question:
Would I still feel worthy if nobody needed anything from me?

That’s when I realized how easy it is to build our identity around being useful.

Being the helper.
Being the fixer.
Being the strong one.
Being the person everyone can count on.

And while those qualities are beautiful...

They are not the same thing as connection.

People can need what you do without truly knowing who you are.

People can appreciate your support without seeing your heart.

People can rely on you without connecting with you.

Being needed feels safe.

Being loved requires us to be seen.

And that is a very different kind of courage.

Can anyone else relate?

Have you ever noticed that the stronger you’ve become, the harder it is to let yourself soften?

For years, I thought I needed to become softer.
More feminine.
More relaxed.
More surrendered.

But what I’ve realized is that softness isn’t something we force.

It’s something that naturally emerges when we feel safe.

Many of us learned how to be capable.
How to handle everything.
How to carry the emotional load.
How to be the one everyone can count on.

And while those qualities can serve us...

They can also become armor.

The challenge isn’t becoming less powerful.

The challenge is feeling safe enough to put the armor down.

Because real strength isn’t about holding everything together.

It’s about staying connected to yourself while life asks you to grow.

Maybe your next level isn’t becoming a different version of yourself.

Maybe it’s finally feeling safe enough to be all of who you already are.

Powerful.
Soft.
Confident.
Connected.
At the same time.

Can you relate to this?

Everyone wants a breakthrough.
Nobody wants the scrimmage.

Nobody wants the season where the old version of themselves no longer fits, but the new version hasn’t fully arrived.

The season where what used to feel familiar no longer feels like home.

The season where certainty disappears.
The season where you’re learning to trust yourself at a deeper level than ever before.

Lately I’ve found myself in that space.
No longer who I was.
Not yet who I’m becoming.

And while it’s uncomfortable, I’ve come to realize something:
Transformation doesn’t happen when we become aware of the pattern.

Transformation happens when we stay connected to ourselves long enough to practice something different.

That’s the scrimmage.
The messy middle.
The threshold between awareness and embodiment.

Most people want to skip this part.

But this is where the real work happens.
This is where identity shifts.
This is where nervous system capacity expands.
This is where we become someone different.

So I’m curious...
Where are you right now?
1️⃣ Awareness — “I see the pattern.”
2️⃣ The Scrimmage — “I’m practicing something different.”
3️⃣ Embodiment — “I’ve become someone different.”

For most of my life, I thought safety lived in the answers.

If I could just figure it out...
If I could create the perfect plan...
If I could understand the problem...
If I could control the outcome...

Then I’d finally feel safe.

But something became painfully obvious over the last year.

I’ve figured out a lot of things.

I’ve built businesses.
I’ve coached people.
I’ve studied human behavior.
I’ve spent years doing deep personal development work.

And yet there were still moments where uncertainty would arrive and my nervous system would go looking for safety.

Because safety was never hiding inside the answers.

Safety was never hiding inside certainty.
Safety was never hiding inside control.
And it was never hiding inside another person.

The deepest safety I’ve found is learning how to stay connected to myself when life doesn’t go according to plan.

When someone leaves.
When fear shows up.
When uncertainty arrives.
When the future isn’t clear.

The goal isn’t to become fearless.

The goal is to remain connected to yourself while fear is present.

I’m curious...
What have you spent years trying to control in order to feel safe?

This morning I woke up overwhelmed.

My heart was racing.
My mind immediately started making a list of everything I had to do:
✔️ Business
✔️ Moving
✔️ Life decisions
✔️ Responsibilities

The old version of me would have jumped straight into productivity mode.

Check things off.
Get moving.
Get the dopamine hit.
Feel temporarily better.

But lately I’ve been practicing something different.

Instead of fixing the feeling...

I’ve been getting curious about it.

And when I slowed down enough to listen, I realized something:

I wasn’t overwhelmed.
I didn’t feel safe.

And underneath that?
I felt alone.

It wasn’t actually about my to-do list.

My mind had simply grabbed onto the nearest problem to explain what my nervous system was feeling.

How often do we do that?
We obsess about work.
Money.
Relationships.
The future.
When really there’s a deeper feeling asking to be acknowledged.

For me, this is The Scrimmage.
The messy middle between awareness and embodiment.
The place where life asks:

Can you stay connected to yourself while practicing something different?

Can you create safety from within instead of reaching for old coping mechanisms?

Today I was reminded that the deepest safety isn’t found in armor.

And it isn’t found in another person.

It’s found in staying connected to ourselves no matter what happens.

I’d love to hear from you:
Are you currently in awareness, in the scrimmage, or in embodiment?

One of the biggest misconceptions I had about healing was believing that if I did enough work, I’d stop getting triggered.

I thought if I did enough therapy...
Read enough books...
Attended enough retreats...
Learned enough about nervous system regulation...

I’d eventually reach a place where nothing bothered me anymore.

Then life happened.
Change happened.
Heartbreak happened.

And I realized something:
Healing isn’t the absence of triggers.

Triggers are part of being human.

The real question is:
How quickly can we reconnect to ourselves after we get triggered?

Can we stay connected when uncertainty shows up?

Can we stay connected when old wounds get activated?

Can we stay connected when life asks us to grow?

For me, this is what healing is really about.

Not perfection.
Connection.
And reconnection.

Because healing isn’t measured by how few triggers we have.
It’s measured by how quickly we can come home to ourselves after one.

I’m curious...
What helps you reconnect to yourself after you’ve been triggered?

One of the biggest lessons from my transformation journey has been this:

The parts of ourselves that create the most problems are often trying to create the most protection.

For a long time, I judged certain behaviors in myself.
I judged the reactions.
I judged the patterns.
I judged the parts of me that showed up when I felt threatened, scared, hurt, abandoned, or unsafe.

And do you know what all that judgment accomplished?
Nothing.

It just made me feel worse.

The real shift happened when I became curious instead of critical.

When I stopped asking:
“What’s wrong with me?”

And started asking:
“What is this part of me trying to protect?”

That’s when compassion entered the conversation.
That’s when healing began.
That’s when transformation became possible.

Because judgment creates separation.
Compassion creates connection.

And connection is where transformation lives.

One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is learning to sit beside the parts of us that are hurting instead of trying to fight them.

One of the biggest shifts in my work over the past year has been this:
Most people don’t need more awareness.
They need more capacity.

The ability to stay connected to themselves while navigating stress, uncertainty, relationships, business, health challenges, and transformation.

Vital energy isn’t just about feeling good.
It’s about creating the internal conditions necessary for growth.

Sleep.
Nutrition.
Nature.
Boundaries.
Relationships.
Environment.
Nervous system regulation.

All of these contribute to our capacity to stay connected when life asks us to grow.

This conversation from Paper Napkin Wisdom episode 369 with aligns deeply with what I’m building.

Because transformation isn’t just about knowing.

It’s about becoming.

And becoming requires energy.

What currently drains your vital energy the most?

A year ago, I set an intention to move forward despite fear.

I thought that meant growth in my career.

What I didn’t realize was that life was about to rearrange almost everything.

The last year has brought heartbreak, uncertainty, massive change, uncomfortable truths, and some of the deepest personal growth I’ve ever experienced.

What I’ve learned is that transformation doesn’t happen when we become aware of a pattern.

Transformation happens in the messy middle.
The space between awareness and embodiment.
The space where you know what needs to change, but you haven’t fully become the new version of yourself yet.

I call this The Scrimmage.

It’s where life asks:
Can you stay connected to yourself while everything feels uncertain?
Can you keep showing up when the old version of you wants to retreat?
Can you trust yourself before you have all the answers?

I’m still in The Scrimmage.
And that’s okay.

Because transformation isn’t about perfection.
It’s about staying connected long enough to become who you’re meant to be.

I’m curious...
Which stage are you in right now?
1️⃣ Awareness
2️⃣ The Scrimmage (Integration)
3️⃣ Embodiment
