Last night I had the pleasure of doing what I love.
Many of my students have heard me start stories with, "I walked into a bar..."
Well, this was one of those nights.
I found myself talking with a professional MMA fighter who had fought the night before. Nice guy, but it was obvious he was hurting. As we talked, he shared some of what was going on and the pain he was dealing with.
At one point I looked at him and said,
"You don't know me, but put your elbow in my hand."
The look he gave me was priceless.
Then he shrugged and said, "I'll try anything."
As soon as he did, I settled in and started doing what I do. My hands moved where they moved.
A few moments later he looked at me and said,
"Those are pressure points, but you're not really touching me."
Then he paused.
"The pain is going away."
I laughed and told him,
"If you're feeling better, then stop talking and let me do what I do."
A minute or two later I asked him how he was doing.
He said the tension was gone and that he felt relaxed.
I asked if I could do a little more and warned him it might hurt for a moment.
Truthfully, I was a little apprehensive. The last thing I wanted was to get into it with an MMA fighter.
But I followed what I was perceiving.
The look on his face afterward was priceless.
"How do you do that?" he asked.
I smiled and told him,
"The same energy I learned to put my hands through cinder blocks in martial arts, I learned how to reverse to heal."
We talked for a while. He bought me a drink. Then he headed off dancing and having a good time.
A little later he came back.
It looked like he had tweaked something while he was out on the dance floor.
I looked at him and asked,
"Is it right here?"
Again, that look.
Again, the same question.
"How do you do that?"
I just smiled.
Before the night was over he told me about the different treatments he has experienced throughout his career and said he had never experienced anything quite like that. He talked about introducing me to some of his friends who are also fighters.
For me, though, that wasn't the important part.
The important part was being able to help.
The terminology may change, but the modality stays the same.
