Mandi brings lived experience to the conversation on concussion - because what we call “mild” can change everything, and recovery is anything but simple.

Previous data in the 1980s and 1990s noted divorce rates up to 78% after TBI, but more current research has a much lower rate around 25%.

68% of divorces end in the first few years after an individual experiences a TBI.

Why?
- Changes in personality
- Changes in household responsibilities
- Substance use
- Caregiver burnout

Factors that correlated with sustained marriages included age and length of time married - the longer the marriage prior to injury, the greater likelihood of continued marriage, as well as older age at the time of injury.

As I’ve discussed with multiple patients, the health of your relationship going into a brain injury can determine the health after. Couples with difficulties prior tend to get worse, while couples who are strong prior continue or get stronger.

Both couples and individual therapy play a crucial role in relationship rehab.

It’s a beautiful day for a new podcast episode! Episode 188 is now available on your favorite platform!

This week in the podcast, I’m joined by author and TBI survivor, Lee Carlson. Lee shares his story of TBI recovery, which started in 2002. Prior to his injury, he was already using Zen practice in his life, which he was glad to hear would be helpful for his recovery, as well.

We discuss his journey, things he needed and things he learned, and we discuss the inspiration for his books. He’s a great story teller and has great lessons to share!

On this Memorial Day, we remember all who have fought and sacrificed for our freedom. It’s not just about picnics and time at the lake (neither of which were we able to partake in this year, sadly).

It’s a beautiful day for a new podcast episode! Episode 187 is now available on your favorite platform!

I’m back to the ABCs of Concussion this week with the letter S.

There are so many good topics to cover each week, of things that people who experience a concussion/TBI live with on a regular basis, unfortunately. Whether that’s you, or you have symptoms that you don’t know what they’re from, or you’re the provider who needs more education on what to watch for with your patients - this is a great series for you to follow!

This week I cover things like stress, sleep, speech therapy, sensory sensitivities, and more.

Being in the neighborhood of the UN and WHO, I thought it only fit to cover a global statistic this week.

Approximately 65 million individuals experience a traumatic brain injury every year across the globe. This is not a problem that any one country faces alone, and it does not affect every country the same. As I learned at the TBI side event for the WHA this past weekend, South Sudan for example, has 80% of their entire population under 35 years old. TBI greatly affects their workforce, as these individuals are their future.

TBI costs the global economy approximately $400 billion. That’s quite a price tag for an injury that is considered preventable. A TBI is not a one-time event, either - it is often a chronic condition that keeps individuals from returning to their normal function in their families and society.

It was very promising to hear the passion and support from representatives from across the globe on this issue this weekend!

The event this evening here in Geneva was amazing. I shared my lived experience story with the unique perspective of someone who not only is a TBI survivor, but also a TBI provider.

Paul Dubetz also shared his personal story of recovering from an accident while working in Milan. Members of the G4 Alliance shared the importance of the coalition work to get TBI acknowledged as a chronic and reportable health issue. And Ministries of Health and other representatives from Indonesia, South Sudan, Pakistan, Italy, Cambodia, Guatemala, Qatar, Tanzania, and from the WHO shared information on TBI from their parts of the world.

What an amazing experience, which only fueled my passion for this purpose even more!

Thank you to my “emotional support husband” for accompanying me and supporting my passions.
