TRIGGERED? 3 WAYS TO TAKE BACK CONTROL OF YOUR THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS
Have you ever noticed your thoughts and emotions when you feel triggered by something or someone?
Maybe someone cuts you off in traffic, and suddenly you're angry, replaying what happened, and letting one frustrating moment ruin your day.
The problem isn't just what happened. It's how quickly a trigger can take over your thoughts and emotions.
In Living Untethered, Michael Singer discusses ways to work with negative thoughts. Here are three approaches you can practice:
✨ 1. Flip the thought. Change a negative thought into a positive one.
✨ 2. Use a mantra. Repeat a word like peace or love to redirect your attention and help settle your mind and nervous system.
✨ 3. The deepest approach: Watch your thoughts and allow the emotions to pass. Instead of getting pulled into every thought, step back and observe your thoughts and emotions like a neutral observer. Then allow yourself to feel the emotions and let them flow through you—and out of you.
You can use one approach or combine all three: catch the thought, redirect it, and give the emotion space to move through you.
✨ The more you practice, the more automatic this process can become. You'll get better at recognizing your triggers, catching the thoughts that arise, and choosing one of these three approaches—or even combining all three—instead of automatically reacting.
Which of these three approaches would you be most likely to try?
