At Louisa County High School in rural Virginia, a group of teenagers spends months hunched over donated used cars, replacing brakes, swapping tires, flushing cooling systems, learning a trade with their hands. But the final exam isn't a grade. It's a moment.

The cars these students restore don't go to a dealership. They go, free of charge, to single mothers who need a reliable way to get to work.

The program is a partnership between the school's automotive technology class and a local nonprofit called Giving Words. It was founded in 2018 by Eddie Brown and his wife, Ginny, who knew the struggle firsthand. As single parents before they met, both had lived the particular stress of needing a car you can't afford, of a job that depends on transportation you don't have.

What started in Brown's driveway has since spread across Virginia. Together with partner shops, Giving Words has given away more than 60 cars and repaired over 260.

For the students, it turns ordinary shop lessons into something that sticks. And the handover itself is the part no one forgets. The garage door rises, a mother sees the car that's now hers, and realizes what it means, and a room full of teenagers watches her understand that her life just got easier.

That's usually when the tears come. For her, and for the kids who made it happen.

For Sailors stationed at Naval Station Great Lakes, Thanksgiving can mean being hundreds of miles from family and loved ones. But thanks to a special community tradition, they don’t have to spend the holiday alone.

The tradition of community members opening their homes to Sailors for Thanksgiving dates back to World War I, a powerful example of how Americans have supported our Sailors for more than a century.

Here’s the ugly truth—and it’s not just that I need reading glasses.

It’s almost 8 p.m., and I’m still at the nonprofit office, looking at numbers that are getting harder to ignore.

Our most recent recurring donor signed up on July 28 to give $25 a month. We’re genuinely grateful for him.

Since then, eight more first responders have signed up for mental health support, joining the 20 we were already serving. That care has cost $3,357.67.

We’ve also responded to more than 40 support needs totaling $4,544.

That’s $7,901.67 invested in our mission since July 28—without the recurring donor base we need to keep pace.

I know budgets are stretched. Gas, groceries, back-to-school expenses—it all adds up. Asking people to make room for one more thing isn’t easy, and neither is writing this post.

But the need keeps growing. Without more monthly donors, sustaining this work will become increasingly difficult.
If you have room in your budget, please consider becoming a monthly donor. Any amount helps. Even $7 a month, over the course of a year, can cover a mental health session for a local first responder who might otherwise go without care.
