Senator Elizabeth Dole's eyes were opened to the tremendous challenges facing military caregivers when her husband, Bob, was admitted to Walter Reed Medical Center. During her frequent visits, she listened to stories from caregivers and their families whose lives had suddenly changed forever. Their frustration, fear and struggle in the immediate wake of a loved one’s catastrophic injuries inspired Senator Dole to launch the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to support our hidden heroes. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation draws attention to the untold stories of military caregivers. By shining a light on these hidden heroes, our country can work together to seek solutions for the tremendous challenges and long-term needs of our nation’s military caregivers.

"I have seen what a laugh can do. It can transform almost unbearable tears into something bearable, even hopeful." — Bob Hope

Long after the makeshift platforms and foxholes of the South Pacific, Bob Hope's legacy endures. For over 50 years, he traveled to the front lines — to Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf — bringing laughter, warmth, and the unmistakable message that America had not forgotten the men and women in uniform. He showed up where few others would, in far-from-home places where a familiar face meant everything.

His presence was a promise that no service member would feel invisible, that no sacrifice would go unwitnessed. And beside him through all of it was Dolores — his partner in life and in purpose, whose grace and devotion to this country's military families matched his own.

Every year, they met in the middle — Bob born on May 29, Dolores on May 27 — and celebrated together on May 28, a tradition as steady and devoted as the two of them. Today, we celebrate them as they always celebrated each other — together.

Through the Bob Hope Critical Assistance Program, their life's work has become a lifeline for military caregivers and families across the country. We share their legacy in every caregiver we support, every crisis we help a family navigate, every moment of hope that arrives when it's needed most.

Happy birthday, Bob and Dolores. We carry it forward.

For military families, veterans, caregivers, and survivors, Memorial Day is more than a date. It’s an empty seat at the table, a flag folded with both pride and pain, and the strength to keep going in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We must pause to honor the bravery of those who gave their lives for our great country. We are also reminded of the importance of caring for those who have lost a loved one while serving our nation. To all who have made this sacrifice, who loved someone who did, or are supporting someone who has served: we thank you and we support you. 🇺🇸❤️

This weekend at the 600 has been about more than racing. 🏁

Military and veteran caregiving families gathered trackside to share stories, create memories, and spend time with people who understand the caregiving journey. Alongside and our partners at , families experienced a weekend centered on connection and community.

Special moments with legends and made the experience even more meaningful, reminding caregivers that their service and sacrifice matter both on and off the track.

For many caregivers, weekends like this offer something rare: a chance to feel supported, celebrated, and surrounded by people who truly understand.

“Today, Congress answered the call.”

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act — a long-overdue bipartisan step toward honoring the full cost of military service.

“For more than 30 years, surviving spouses and severely disabled veterans have absorbed costs that were never meant to be borne alone,” said Elizabeth Dole Foundation CEO Steve Schwab.

This legislation would provide critical financial support to veterans with catastrophic service-connected disabilities and deliver the first non-inflation increase to Dependency and Indemnity Compensation for surviving spouses since 1993.

We are grateful to the lawmakers, advocates, caregivers, and families who fought to make this moment possible — and we urge the Senate to act swiftly.

The obligation to our nation’s veterans, caregivers, survivors, and families cannot wait.

Yesterday, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation held its 11th Annual National Convening — and the energy in the room was a reminder of why this work matters.

Military and veteran caregivers, lawmakers, advocates, healthcare leaders, researchers, and partners came together with a shared purpose: to listen, to learn, and to turn ideas into action for America's hidden heroes.

Some of the most meaningful moments came in honoring three extraordinary champions whose leadership has changed the lives of military and veteran caregivers.

🏆 Brian Vines received the Distinguished Caregiver Award, a powerful recognition of his lived experience, advocacy, and steadfast dedication to fellow caregivers.

🏆 Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi received the Lifetime Leadership Award for her decades of public service and unwavering support for military and veteran families.

🏆 Senator Jerry Moran received the Elizabeth Dole Foundation Congressional Champion Award for his continued leadership in advancing policies that strengthen support for caregivers nationwide.

Each has shown up for military and veteran caregivers in ways that are deeply their own — and profoundly felt.

Congratulations to Brian, Speaker Emerita Pelosi, and Senator Moran — and thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday. Together, we're building a stronger future for America's hidden heroes.

A Licensed Practical Nurse, caregiver, and advocate from West Virginia, Stacy has spent nearly two decades helping her husband rebuild his life and using her voice to support veterans and their families.

Please join us in welcoming Stacy to the 2026 Class of Dole Caregiver Fellows! 💙

After years of supporting Jesse through chronic pain, TBI, and PTSD, Shannon is turning her experience into action as a 2026 Dole Caregiver Fellow.

She’s on a mission to help military and veteran families across Maine feel less alone and more willing to ask for support. Congratulations, Shannon! Stay tuned to meet the rest of this year’s incredible Fellows.

“Veterans have earned the right to age in place with grace and dignity, and aging veterans need someone in their corner to navigate today's healthcare systems.”

Meet Serena Guimarey of Las Vegas, Nevada — a 2026 Dole Caregiver Fellow.

Serena became her father’s full-time caregiver when she welcomed the Vietnam veteran into her home. Since then, she has turned her experience into action, advocating for better support for military and veteran caregivers and mentoring others on the same journey.

Her biggest win? More meaningful time together and teaching her children that family means showing up for one another. Stay tuned to meet the rest of the 2026 Dole Caregiver Fellows.
